Holland, of Gastonla, will be candidate for county treasurer at the coming Dem ocratic primary the coming summer, many of his friends having urged him to make the race. Capt. Holland is one of Gaston's best-known sons. He is a Confederate veteran and a busi ness man of ability. Shuford and family are moving today to Gastonla from Dallas and will occupy the residence recently vacated by Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Hardin at No. Ill South Broad street. Mr, Shuford is county treas urer and- a member of the wholesale grocery firm of the Shuford Company of Gastonla. He and his family will be warmly welcomed to our town where they are by no means strangers. Following an Illness of several weeks Mis? Jennie Warren died Sun day afternoon at the City Hospital of gastritis. The body was removed tc the home of her brother, Mr. George Warren, at the Ozark mill, where the funeral was held yesterday af ternoon at 1 o'clock, following which the body was taken to Lowell for burial. Hambright of Cleveland County, , After a Hard Seattle, Lands Nervy Negro Behind 'the Bars.' Charlotte Observer. Kings Mountain, Jan. 1. What has been termed "unmitigated nerve" was displayed by Mr. K. N. Ham bright last night In the capture of a big burly black negro, who-had bro ken into his house. Mr. Hambright, who lives several miles south of town, was awakened about 10 o'clock by a noise in his dining room and slipping out of bed he took po sition behind the hall curtains and awaited the intruder's exit. The ne gro appeared in the hall and Mr. Hambright grabbed him and, as Mr. Hambright termed It, "the fun be gan." The negro proved to be a good man , and soon dragged Mr. Hambright out of the house Into the yard .where he escaped. Mr. Ham bright, 'who . was barefooted and in his night clothes, gave chase and laptured his man a second time about one hundred yards from the Iwelling, sending him t6 the ground. He sat upon' hhn until his brother, Mr. V. L. Hambright, who had been wakened, arrived. ' The negro was bound and driven to town where, af er a hearing before H. P. Allison, Esq., he , was sent to board with Sheriff Wilkins at Shelby. A big six-inch barrel revolver was taken ,'rom the negro In the scuffle and is low in the hands of officers. Operation Powerless to Stave Off Ef fects cf Pistol Shot Wound In Brain Inflicted by Morris Bowman on Self. ass. Charlotte Observer, Sunday. Failing to rally from the bullet wound in his brain inflicted by him self in Kings Mountain, Mr. Morris T. Bowman died yesterday morning about 1 o'clock at the Charlotte San atorium. As detailed in yesterday's paper, the fatal shot was fired In a deep cut near the Dilllng mills. He had walked away from the Mountain View hotel where he had been under surveillance based on the suspicion that he might seek to take his life. He had never wholly recovered from the effects of a siege with typhoid fe ver during the recent summer, his mind having been somewhat affect ed. He never regained conscious ness after having fired the shot. Mr. Bowman was 27 years old, be ing a son of Mr. J. T. Bowman of the Shelby National Bank. His death is a tragedy much to be deplored.
