Hines, of Lincoln ton, N. C, was found in an uncon scious condition last night at a camp fire two miles north of Tifton, near a railroad. It Is thought that Hines was attacked while asleep by a ne gro companion, robbed and left for dead. He was discovered by a white tramp and was brought to Tifton and placed In a hospital. Tonight it is said that there is slight chance for his recovery. "Hines, in company with a negro, both strangers here, displayed a large sum of money here yesterday afternoon, in making some purchas es, and later he and the negro left the town as they had come in, walk ing. Each carried a dress suit case. The negro has disappeared. "In Hines' pocket was a newspa per clipping which told of an attempt to rob D. A. Hines on a Sante Fe train at Conroe. Texas, in October, 1908, when he beat two of his as sailants off and the third was arrested." ERA OF BIG MILLS. Conditions in the South Xow Justify Operation of Large Xumber of Spindles. Textile Manufacturer. The cotton manufacturing South of the past has been identified with little mills, but the dawn of the era of big mills is at hand and the devel opment in this respect will be re markable in the next few years. Conditions in the past have jus tified the mill of few spindles, but as competition becomes greater and the industry develops it wilU be found that high grade men will command the high salaries which can only be paid by the large corporations. The little mills of yesterday have gradually doubled and redoubled until they have grown into real greatness. A few years ago a mill of 15,000 to 25,000 spindles was a large mill for the south, but there are today in this section 51 mills of over 50,000 spindles, and no mill of less than that is considered as large. The premier mill of the South in point of size is now the Riverside and Dan River Cotton 'Mills Compa ny, of Danville, Va., which has 230,- 000 spindles and 7,500 looms. The next is the Erwln Mill Com pany which has 158,000 spindles in its four mills. The Union Buffaloe Mill Co., comes third with 151,000 spindles. There are now eight cor porations in the South with 100,000 or more spindles. Mills of Over 100,000 Spindles.
