Long Bros. tf. Death From Pellagra. News reached Gastonia this after noon of the death at her home in Mountain Island at 10 o'clock this morning of Mrs. T. H. Roberts, a daughter of Mr. J. L. Grlce, of Gas tonia. Death resulted from pellagra from which she had suffered for many months. The funeral arrange ments are not known, though it is stated she will be buried some time toinoi row. Federal meat Inspectors have shown that two per cent of the 56, 000,000 hogs in this country a year ago, and valued then at $339,000,- 000, are affected with tuberculosis. Senator John W. 'Mr. Charlie Long returned this week from Oklahoma where he has been for the past year. Mr. J. A. (Lon) Groves, of Al bemarle, was here Saturday shaking hands with old friends. Eggs have dropped to 20 cents a dozen from 35, which was the pre vailing price for many weeks. The Gastonia Woman's Better ment Association holds its regular meeting at the Central school this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Rev. R. B. Abernethy, of Ruth erford College, visited in town this week. Thomasson moved yesterday from the Adams house on West Long avenue to the residence on East Long avenue formerly oc cupied by Mr. Frank Smith. The Gazette is requested to state that Rev. W. H. Hardin will preach at St. John's church, High Shoals, Sunday morning and at his church here Sunday night. Solicitor Kelly Henry, of Ches ter, S. C, was in Gastonia a short while between trains Saturday. He was en route home from Gaffney, S C, where he had been attending court. Mr. Carl Terrell, formerly tick et agent here but who recently went to Charlotte to take a position as night tfckt agent at the Southern depot, spent Wednesday in Gastonia Mr. O. W. Arrington, formerly with the First National Bank, but now of Lenoir, passed through Gas tonia this morning on his return from a visit to the Eastern part of the State. Mr. Weldon Schenck, of Greens boro, spent yesterday In Gastonia the guest of Capt. S. G. Fry and family. Mr. Schenck Is a son of the late David Schenck. He is a trav eling representative of the Roanoke Coal Company. Mr. Chesley McGInnas, who has been the very capable assistant to Agent L. P. Holland, of the Sea board, leaves this week with Mrs, McGinnas, for Charlotte, where he has secured a good position in the railway service. Shelby Star, 8th A special from Southside to this morning's Charlotte Observer says that the Lincoln Cotton Mills at that place, owned by Mr. D. E. Rhyne, will curtail by shutting down two days In each week until the market Improves. Mr. and Mrs. George C. Ded mondt left the first of the week for Shelby where they will make their home in the future, Mr. Dedmondt having accepted a position with the Southern Cotton Oil Company. Dur ing their stay in Gastonia they have made many friends who, while re gretting their departure, wish them much success and happiness in their new home. The city has Just issued in re vised form a volume containing the town charter, ordinances, by-laws and regulations, bringing them up to date. It consists of 124 pages and has marginal topic heads and an index, so that the local law with ref erence to any subject can be found easily. The work of compiling this publication was done by City Attor ney George W. Wilson. Rev. J. Walter Smith, super intendent of the Thompson Orphan age at Charlotte, was the guest last night of Rev. W. H. HaTdin. He was en route, home from Yorkville whither he went to visit the new Episcopal orphange which was mov ed some months ago from Charles ton to that town. Mr. Smith found that institution In most excellent condition, there being some 63 or 70 Inmates.
