Mr. Craig Smith Advances Some VaJ uable Information Regarding the Little Weather Prophet Ioes Not Come Out in Day Time Hence His Prognostications are Ruled by the Moon and Not by the Sun, as Gen erally Supposed. To the Editor of The Gazette: It seems that you are some what weak in the faith as regards the liz ard, snake and dove prognostication of the approach of Spring. Now, I claim that if the groundhog is so wise as to foretell so much, the three above named ought to be able to tell something about it after it has hap pened. You know we are all good at guessing, if we don't guess too far ahead, but it seems that you are try ing to defend the reputation of Mr. Groundhog and in so doing you, I think, have misrepresented him. You will have to read up a little, also others that pretend to believe in Mr. Groundhog. As for myself, I am a great believ er In the moon and I think therein lies the whole secret. I think Mr. Groundhog is controlled also by the moon, and I will prove it to you be fore I am done. You know we plant everything by the moon. Now, if you will just study the moon there is no telling what you can learn. I un derstand that the moon Is the main stay that our weather prophets in the large cities depend on for their In formation. While I have seen the moon only at a distance, I have learn ed very much about the weather and other things from that source. Now, the argument is this, from your standpoint, that If Mr. Groundhog comes out of his winter den on the 2nd of February and the sun shines he sees his shadow and goes back to his den and stays there for six weeks, while we, poor humans, that can't stay in our dens conveniently, tough It out through six weeks more of winter weather. Now, honestly, do you claim that we nave gotten that six weeks more of winter weather since the 2nd of February. I say, we did not get it and I say more than that. Mr Groundhog did not say we would get it. Some one says, prove It. On the 26th of February the ground thawed the weather turned warm and, with the exception of one little cold snap which lasted for day or two, we have been having beautiufl spring weather. As for that little cold snap (that like to froze you) it was just a cold snap that we always have once a month during the spring. They some times come twice month. We will have one next month, that is April and may, and very probably in June. Last year, If I mistake not, we had frost in North Carolina every month In the year ex cept one (July), and Mr. Groundhog running at large all this time. Now then, I said Mr. Groundhog dld'nt say we would hare six weeks more winter. I also said he was con trolled by the moon. When i say moon I mean moon, not the sun. You know we hare thirteen months in a year (I mean moon months.) There are 13 full moons from one Easter to another, that makes Easter come on different dates. Now I will state right here Is where Mr. Groundhog comes in. I hare learned that Mr. Groundhog does not travel in day light at all, but travels altogether at night and that In the fore part of the night (for reference see Hunter's Guide by Cove, page 168). There fore, the son may shine all day and have no effect on him so far as mak ing 'a shadow Is concerned, nut on the other hand if you .will notice February tad the moon was dark. consequently ' Mr. Groundhog ' cams I out on the night of February 2nd, 1910, saw no shadow. So he re mained out and has been helping us to enjoy the last three weeks of this beautiful spring weather. ' Now, Mr. Editor, I hope you will read up as I suggested. Get posted, get you an almanac (the drug stores will give you one) and study the moon. Plant your garden by it or tell the other fellow to do it. In other words, when the iron gets hot, then Is the time to strike. When the moon gets right then is the time to plant. I am very sorry that you did not go ahead and make garden when I told .you to, then you could have enjoyed good fresh early garden veg etables along with me. In fact, my sympathy is so great for you that I believe that I will promise you right .nv har 1 wi'l briug veil up a nice mess of early vegetables of the first that I have to come in, which will be some three or four weeks yet. I planted mine when spring first open ed, which was the first week in March, you know. CRAIG SMITH. Catawba Store Co's. Opening. This is a remarkably good record and speaks In high terms of the excellent management of the company's affairs. LITTLE JOHNNY HAYES. (Written for The Gazette.) The sound of little footsteps No longer greets our ears; Of the little one God gave us For only two short years. Another crib stands empty; Our babe with soft brown eyes, Has gone to dwell with Jesus, Far, far, above the skies. How oft to mother's bosom, She clasped her precious child; While he with fond affection Looked in her face and smiled. We shall miss our darling, When circled 'round the fire; But a vojce whispers softly, He has only risen higher. May the hand that took him from us, Gently lead us all the way; Till we find ourselves with Johnny, Where we'll live In endless day. A FRIEND. New Phones.
