MAIL ORDER CASE AT HOME. Norman Johnson Gives an Illustra tion of How it Works. Anderson ( S. C.) Mail. We wish everybody in Anderson- son could have heard" Mr. Norman H. Johnson's address last night. It was a plain business talk, and was instructing as well as entertaining. While speaking of the mail order evil, and the need of educating the people along this line, he told a cap ital story which illustrates the point better than anything we have ever heard. A farmer went to a merchant in a country town in North Carolina, he said to buy an axe. The merchant priced the axe at $1.10. "That is too high," said the far mer, "I can get it from Sears, Roe buck & Co., for 90 cents." "All right," said the merchant, "I will sell you the axe as cheap as you can get it from those people. Give me the 90 cents." The farmer handed over the mon ey and then the merchant said: "Now give me 8 cents that you would have to pay for a money or der. And 2 cents additional for postage that you would have had to pay." "I hadn't thought of that," re plied the farmer, but you are right. Here is your money." "And now," continued the mer chant, "give me 25 cents which you would have to pay as express on the axe from Chicago." "By gum," exclaimed the farmer, "I see. But you are right, and I am a man of my word. Here's your !5 Good Coffee Is a requisite for Jin enjoyable meal, esjeH:illy if that meal happens to 1m- breakfast. The merchant wrapped the axe in a neat package, and laid it in a shelf behind the counter. "Come around in ten days and get your axe," he said. "You would have had to wait that long If you had or dered it from Chicago." The farmer almost fainted but ha couldn't say a word. The merchant had him dead to rights. But the merchant after teasing him for a little while gave him the axe and returned 15 cents, being the excess of his original price on the axe. Special Tax Election. Two school districts on yesterday secured orders from the county com missioners calling special elections on the question of levying a special school tax of 30 cents on each $100 and 90 cents on each poll. These were district No. 7, near Bessemer City, and 'the djstrict including the town of Stanley. The election in district No. 7 will be held on May 21st. The Dallas Election. Statesville Landmark. A meeting was recently held at Henderson, Vance county, in the in terest of "local self-government," Mr. W. A. Self, of Catawba county, being the orator of the occasion. The Post says a mass meeting "on the subject of local self-government' will be held in Salisbury next month at a date to be named, Mr. Self has j been asked to speak on that occas ion. The Post further says it is the purpose of the promoters of the Salisbury meeting to form an "or ganization of a non-political charac ter." These meetings are for the pur pose of , organizing a movement to secure the repeal or modification of the State prohibition laws, the idea being to leave to each community or county the privilege to say whether liquor shall or shall not be sold. As we see it, only harm can result'from it. The people of the State have voted for prohibition and many peo ple who are by no means enthusias tic prohibitionists are not in favor of re-opening the question. If it be said that the law is not enforced- which is true of localities the an swer is that it is the duty of all good citizens to help create a sent! ment for law enforcement for the enforcement not only of the prohi bition laws but of all laws. We are of the opinion that a large majority of the people of the State now favor State prohibition, and without en tering into any discussion of the case. The Landmark is In favor of their having what they want. To that end this paper will continue, in the future as in. the past, to cry aloud for the enforcement of all laws and the punishment of the guilty.
