OBSERVATIONS. i ' i (Written for The Gazette.) , , Shaking hands In Love, Politics, Religion and ' . the usual enquiries bout the family in general are all very good, but It Is not a sure sign that you will go In on the first or even the eecond ballot. Some of the older readers of Gas ton county paper will remember that certain cotton mill owners made the statement that their particular mill was put in operation for full time and no cut In wages would he considered. ' ' The condition of 'the hundreds and thousands of strikers in Philadel phia and other Northern States who, on the impulse of the moment, heed ed the advise of the agitator, are not only suffering mental hardships but their homes, most of them partly paid for out of the hard earnings of their wages, will in most cases go back to their former owners and the real working man will have nothing left but the sad experience of a lost cause. Certainly not one-half of the promises made during a hot cam paign are expected to be fulfilled. We may all take you by the hand and tell how much we love each oth er but when it comes to voting ? We are glad to know that Andy Smith, who was born and reared right here and taught two free schools and didn't carry a single whipping himself will lead this cam paign in speech-making. There are just lots of working people who would like to feel what was once termed a "Cleveland pan ic." Now, brethren, let's all be right good for the next few months for just a little contrainess on the part of about four hundred voters would put old Gaston in a "Devil of a Phix." We have one good reason for ad vocating the nomination of Captain Holland, Andy Smith and Charley Corn well. That reason is t hey are three among' the best men in the county and are from Lowell. Alter the primary, some of the candidates will know for a fact that they did shake the hypocritical hand and accepted the smile of de rision as an honest indication of the voter's gratitude. Agent J. L. Thompson is on duty again alter whipping a case of the grip. The street car line is going through this here mmmm again. JUNO. Lowell, N. C, April 7, 1910. Trinity College Catalogue. Pence, Washing ton correspondent of The Raleigh News and Observer, writes the fol lowing in his letter of last Tuesday: "Hon. Willie L. Moore, head of the Weather Bureau, thinks the folks ought to roast the groundhog now Instead of the Weather Bureau. He says: "The ground hog Is the greatest four-flusher that ever looked at a I cloud and pretended to tell what was in it. "wnat did be. do this year? Did he make good?. Not a bit of It He j was as far off as we were about the probable., weather conditions. "He , crawled out of hie : hole on i February; 2nd, saw hie ehadow; got hi picture-, fat ,every paper; la- the country and then beat It back to his caTeraoua lair,, leering behind , the idea that the remainder of February and all March would be marked by I bad weather. ': " Wa If a reliable forecast? I should say not. - We have had the mildest and most beautiful March in years. Yet the groundhog gets off without a single roast. And next year people will be Just as eager to believe In his Judgment. "That la rank favoritism." Our Honor Roll.
