The annual meeting of the Gasto nia Commercial Club was held in the club rooms last night. The election of officers for the ensuing year re sulted as follows: S. A. Robinson, president; B. H. Parker, 1st vice president; R. B, Bablngton, 2nd vice president; J. K. Dixon, Jr., secretary and treasurer. A motion was car ried instructing the Industrial Com mittee to investigate the feasibility of having a "Gaston County Day" at some time this fall. The Public Im provements committee reported that they foad taken up the matter of a new union depot and would have a Joint meeting at an early date with the board of aldermen an the sub Ject. It is the purpose of the club to begin active work on the project of obtaining a new depot, and it is probable that a delegation will be sent direct to Southern Railway headquarters in Washington. Moss, of Cherry- ville, visited his sister, Mrs. Andrew Hendrick, here this week. Mr. W. Y. Warren attended the Sbriners' meeting in Charlotte Wed nesday night. Mr. Ernest Smith has been con fined to bis home on Highland street for several days by illness. The Bessemer City graded schools will close the last of the month. The commencement exer cises will take place April 30-May 1. Mrs. Ferrle Pegram returned today to 'her borne In Shopton, Meck lenburg county, after a pleasant vis it to her sister, Mrs. W. L. Gallant. The many friends of Mrs. L. T. McLean, who has been seriously 111 for a week or more, will be glad to learn that she Is now much better. Mr. John C. Rbyne, of Green ville, S. Wilts, who has been here for several weeks undergoing treatment at the Gaston Hospital, returned the first of the week to Le noir. As announced elsewhere in this and former issues, the county Dem ocratic executive committee will meet In Dallas tomorrow, Saturday, at 11 a. m. Capt. C. M. Nolen Is still con fined to his home from the effects of an attack of ptomaine poisoning which he suffered last Friday night. He iB now rapidly regaining his strength and hopes to be out again in a few days. At the regular meeting of Gas tonia Lodge, No. 188. I. O. O. F., last night Mr. J. E. McAllister was elected representative to the Grand Lodge, which meets in Goldsboro on May 10th, with Mr. Elmer Spencer as alternate. Mr. John F. Brison returned yesterday from a visit to Mr. R. F. Ratdhford's family In the Union neighborhood. He says Mr. Ratch- ford was having on his table from his own garden new Irish potatoes as large as guinea eggs. Out of a total of 17 new phones Just installed by the Piedmont Tele phone & Telegraph Company, it is interesting to note that eleven of them were placed In residences In tihe country. This is additional proof that residents of the rural dis tricts are coming more and more to regard the telephone as a necessity and not a luxury. The fire at the oil mill Wednes day morning melted the Piedmont Telephone & Telegraph Co's. cable at that point as a result of which users of phones in the eastern part of town were minus phone service for a day or more. The trouble was re paired as promptly as possible, how ever, and everything Is now working smoothly. Mrs. Walter C. Davis returned yesterday from Winston-Salem, where she has been spending some time with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Benton. She was accompanied by Mrs. P. N. Bailey, Miss Eva Teague and Miss Julia Wilson, who will be 'her guests for some time. The party made the trip from Winston-Salem In Mrs. Bailey's automo bile. Mr. Charles Cavls has returned from Spartanburg, S. C, whither he was called some days ago on account of the illness of his mother, whose condition is now much Improved. Annual Celebration. Monday, April 18th, is the date for the annual celebration of the Calathenian Literary Society of Lin- wood College. This Is one of the interesting occasions of the school year and always draws a large num ber of Interested auditors. Gastonia will, as usual, have a good delega tion on hand. Grier, mention of whose death appeared in Tuesday's Gazette, Is from yester day's Charlotte Observer: "The funeral of Mr. Julius S. Grier took place at Providence Presbyterian church yesterday afternoon at o'clock, the service being conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. M. Parker. The church was crowded with friends, there being a number of col ored people in attendance also, the deceased having been universally popular. The interment was made in the cemetery close by the church The pallbearers were: Messrs. A. J. Williams, W. F. Stevens, J. B. Cof fey, J. F. Stephens, W. G. Matthews and J. S. Stewart. All the children except Mr. Joe Grier, who is in Al buquerque, N. M., were at the fun eral. The floral offerings were very beautiful. A number of friends at tended from Charlotte." -J. N. Large crowds are in attendance upon the evangelistic meetings be ing conducted by Rev. P. G. Elsom, pastor of Evangel Baptist church, Raleigh, in Bradley hall at the Lo ray Mills. Mr. Elsom is an evangel ist of years experience and preaches bold, fearless Bible truths. The pastors of the community are in at tendance and co-operating with the meeting. Services are beld each night at 7:45 o'clock. There will be three services Sunday at 11 a. m. and 7:45 p. m., also a special ser mon to men only at 3 p. m. All are invited to this revival. The subject for the service for men only Sunday afternoon will be, "Your Chickens Will Come Home to Roost." This is said to be one of the evangelist's strongest sermons and he hopes a large number of men will be present to hear it. "THE WIZARD" wants to meet you face to face at the Gastonia Fur niture Co. Saturday April, Oth. Mayor T. L. Craig returned this morning from Baltimore, where be has been with Mrs. Craig, who un derwent an operation at Johns Hop kins Hospital last week.
