Representatives of 75 cotton mills in North Carolina met in Greensbo ro Tuesday and, after several hours of full and free discussion, unani mously adopted resolutions declar ing for one-third curtailment of the normal output of yarns and cloths of .each mill between May 1 and September 1 of this year. The res olution ' calls upon all the mills in the South to co-operate by the adop tion rot a similar rate cf curtail ment. Night .work is also depre cated and It is not to be engaged In during this period. Mr. McArthur Assaulted. Joe Sanders, white, an employe of the Avon Mills. A la the city Jail charged with an assault on Mr. S. E. McArthur this morning. Mr. Mc Arthur is confined to his home near the Avon Mill suffering from a number-of bruises about the face and perhaps a brcXen jaw bone. As nearly as can be learned Mr. Mc Arthur went to the mill this morn ing to collect an account he held against Sanders and In the -course of the conversation Sanders attack- S. and O. Club. Mrs. R. Hope Brison was hostess to the S. and O. Club and a number of invited guests at her home on West Main avenue Wednesday af ternoon, at 3:30 o'clock. The usual game of progressive trail was play ed, the score cards, the work of the hostess,, being pretty handpainted carnations, the club flowers. The tables were marked In the same manner and several vases of pink carnations decorated the rooms where the guests were assembled. f-Durlng the afternoon Miss Elma Rankin rendered several very pretty selections on the piano. The State meeting of the Daugh ters of Liberty, which Is a branch of the Junior Order Unit-id Amerl- ican Mechanics, will be held In Gas tonla on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 26th and 27th. The first meeting will be In the nature of a public reception, to be held In the auditorium of the Cen tral graded school at 7:30 o'clock Tuesday evening. - Following devo tional exercises there will be an ad dress of welcome and response to same, also an address on the prin ciples of the order. PostofBce Receipts Increase. During the year ending March 31, 1910, the receipts . at the Gas tonla postofflce totaled $13,164.26, a gain over the year ending March ! 31, 1909, of $1,224.26, the receipts for that year having amounted to $11,940.00. This indicates a steady growth in the business here and is an Indication of what may be ex pected In this line In the future. While the fiscal year of the Postof flce Department does not end till June, the year for totaling the re ceipts ends the 31st of March. Tide Overturns Republicanism. Kocnester, N. Y., April 19. More than 16,000 voters of Mon roe county changed from the Repub llcan to the Democratic column to day and elected the first Democrat ic Congressman that has represent ea the Thirty Second District in twenty years, James S. Havens, a Democrat running on ' a tariff re form platform, defeated Geo. W. vAldridge, for a score years the rul er of the county Republican organi sation, by 5,900 votes. Monroe county, ; which comprises the Thirty-Second . Congressional District, is normally. Republican by about 6,000. James B. Perkins, whose death in the middle of his third term necessitated a special e lectlon today, carried the district in 108 by 10,167 totes.
