Lander Gray's handsome new' residence on West Second avenue is rapidly approach ing completion. Mr. and Mrs. Gray expect to move in about week af ter next. ' Mrs. T. A. Myers received a tel egram yesterday afternoon summon ing her to the bedside of her daugh ter, Mrs. Carr, of Yanceyvllle, , who is quite seriously ill, very little hope being entertained of her recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lee Rhodes left yesterday for their home in New Orleans. Mrs. Rhodes and child have been the guests for some weeks of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Page. Mr. Rhodes joined her here last week. Mrs. L. " L. Hardin and little son, Legare, are spending some time at Monroe with Mrs. Hardin's parents, Dr. and Mrs. H. F. Chrietx berg. Mr. Hardin was with them from Thursday until yesterday morn ing,, when he returned to Gastonia.' Mr. John E. Hornbuckle will in and Edith Robinson and Rev. R. A. Michael lost a ban tam hen one day last week which had reached the ripe old age of four teen years. She laid with more or less regularity up until about a year , ago. It . is probable that this fowl would have lived longer but for the fact that recently she broke ene of her legs and never recovered from the injury. Mr. Michael prized this bantam very highly because of her age and faithfulness In laying. Mr. J. N. McNalr, of Little Rock, Ark., who has been visiting relatives at Asheville and Black Mountain for some weeks, arrived in Gastonia Friday to spend a few days with his many relatives and friends in this county. Mr. McNalr went from here to Buncombe county as a young man in 1875, and from there to the West in 1878. This is his sec ond visit to this county since he moved. Mir. McNalr has a large con nection here, being related to the Pearsons, Falls, Ferguson and Purs- ley families. Mr. J. M. Sloan, Gaston coun ty's champion matermelon grower, was in town Saturday with a load of his fine melons. They are not as large this year as usual and the ex planation Is that the section of the county in which Mr. Sloan lives has experienced a drought. His farm Is at Sloan's ferry on the Catawba, a mile east of Belmont. There has been no rain to amount to anything there for ten weeks, says Mr. Sloan. A few light showers have fallen but were not sufficient to do much more than lay the dust. For the first time in a long while Mr. Sloan rais ed his melons this year on bottom land. His finest melons have here tofore been raised on the uplands. Miss Watson to Entertain. Davis, died at her home at Lando, S. C, Sunday night after an illness of a month or more. The body was brought to Bessemer City, where Mr. and Mrs. Davis for merly lived, yesterday, and the fun eral services were conducted at Long Creek Presbyterian church this morning at 11 o'clock by Rev. J. F. Armstrong, assisted by Rev. J. J. Kennedy, of Gastonia, a former pas tor of Mrs. Davis. Besides her hus band and several children, Mrs. Da vis is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Messrs. John J., Ragan and R. C. Ormand, of Besse mer City, Mr. B. F. Ormand, of Gas tonia, Miss Lyda Ormand, of Besse mer City, Mrs. S. M. Stacy, of Clo ver, S. C, and Mrs. Lee Ramseur, of Kings Mountain. Mr. B. F. In the article in Friday's Ga zette concerning the new passenger depot, the statement as to the amount of business Gastonia gives the South ern Railway may not have been clearly understood by some. Ac cording to our information the town gives the Southern between 300 and 400 passengers daily on an all-year average and the roads receipts here amount to $60,000 or more monthly.
