DAVENPORT To Hoy Sanitary Drinking Fountains, At a meeting of the Gastonia Wo m n's Betterment Association held at the Central school building Tues day afternoon It was decided that the association would contribute balf of the expense involved In in stalling sanitary drinking fountains In all the city schools. The total cost will be about $200, of which amount $100 will be paid by the as sociation and $100 by the board of city school commissioners. This is a great forward step and has the unanimous endorsement of the asso ciation as well as of practically all, if not all, of the patrons of the schools. Prof. Wray has samples of these fountains here now in opera tion and it is expected that within the next few weeks they will be In stalled in all the school buildings of the town. No Action Taken. No action wae taken further than that a committee was appointed to make an Investigation and report back to the society with recommen dations as to what action should be taken. As previously noted the For syth County Medical Society has pe titioned the State board of medical examiners to refuse examination to holders of certificates from this in stitution. Their letter sent out last week created a sensation all over the State. The ' college Is located at Charlotte. Dr. James A. Holmes, a North Carolinian, has been appointed Qby President Taft as director of the newly created bureau of mines. There would have been nothing sig nificant in this fact had It not been that Secretary Balllnger of the in terior Department opposed the ap pointment. And why? For no oth er reason than that Holmes was a friend and active supporter of the conservation policies of Gifford Pin chot, deposed head of the forestry bureau. There was no disputing the Tact that Dr. Holmes was perhaps better fitted to fill this position than any other living man. But because b stood with the forces which op- Y. M. C. A. Meeting.
