Phone 256 It is probable that the Southern Power Company will bid in the BJewett's Falls power plant, near Rockingham, when it is put up for ale la New York next Wednesday. It will require $1,500,000 to com plete the .plant which will furnish 22.000 horse power. Our Father in Heaven "knoweth that we have need of theae thing.-'." He has taught us to work and pray for these things. There are still those who need Paul's exhortation: "3ut if any provide not for his own, and especially those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." A man is bound to provide bread, education, and religious training for his own family. Some men have been known to spend more time and thought in training bird dogs than they have ever been known to spend on the re ligious instruction of their own chil dren. Yes, the Bible says, we must provide for our own II. Rut We Must Provide Honestly Dishonesty is worse than poverty Dishonesty is worse than ignorance Dishonesty makes religion lmpossi ble. One of the most distressing facts the preacher has to face Is this: There are many children brought up in such an atmosphere of deception, falsehood, and dishones ty, that it is almost impossible to successfully teach such children the essential and eternal distinctions be tween truth and falsehood, between honesty and dishonesty. All dlshon est persons are liars at heart. III. Debt and Rascality. Not many persons start out in life with the fixed Intention of being dis honest. Their radical fault Is that they have no determined purpose to be honest at any cost. Olten they become dishonest almost uncon sciously. In many cases the process Is about the following: Pride They are too proud to live within their means. They must live and dress as fast as some other fool. The person who wears line clothes not paid for Is dishonest. That per son lacks common sense and common honesty. Kxtravagaace Extravagance Is the child of pride. HeaveD save ua from "the pangs that folly pays to pride." Debt Debt is often the beginning of rascality. The man who goes in debt for things he could do without is on the borderland of rascality. Debts easy made ere hard to pay. If you want to keep your credit good, don't use it too often. Better let your credit rust out than wear out. I want you to remember the mile posts on the road to Hell are Pride, Extravagance, Debt, Rascali ty. IV Sl Thlnpn Debt Will Do. It will shorten an honest man's life. It will destroy an honest man's courage. It will destroy an honest man's self-respect. It will make a man a helpless slave. It will diminish a man's chance for future success. It will destroy a man's good in fluence. Owe no man anything" is a good Bible rule. You will And bread and peace and honor therein. V Debt and Amusements. I asked a traveling man the other -.v -hnw in business?" "Not much doing about the only things that's made money this summer are the near-beer (ni-slop) saloons and the picture shows." Persons who run to the picture shows and other places of amusements, but have not paid their debts, are not honest. You have no right to rorce tne grocers and druggists and doctors of the town to pay your way to places of amusement and folly. VI Silly Women and Debt. Many an honest man has been hopelessly and eternally ruined be cause he married a clothes-hanger instead of a good, sensible, praying, woman married a clothes-hanger with one idea In its head: "Social functions." The constant cry of the clothes-rack is "Give me social functions or give me death." The silly clothes-hanger gets the social functions, and the weak, cowardly, hen-pecked, husband gets financial death. The woman who marries a Jug instead of a real man deserves all the pity she gets. But the man who has married too many "social functions" deserves just as much sympathy. It is just as easy to swim the ocean with a mill-stone about your neck as for a poor man married to "social functions" to suc ceed In business. I insist that there are some persons who ought to pay their debts. We have spent enough money since the first of March on ni-slop, picture shows, cheap thea ters, and "social functions" to have paid all the store accounts, doctor's bills, and other debt9 (except cor poration debts) in town. We are lovers of folly more than lovers of honesty. VII Why Some do not Marry There are many sensible, thought ful, young men who ought to marry But these young men see the extrav agance of the times they see that if they marry, they are doomed to failure, that It will be "Impossible for them to maintain the habits of dress and social life of the girl they love. They are afraid of marrying two many "social functions." Now this I say, young men, marry. It's right. It's best. It is for the well rare of our race. There are many good, true, godly, sensible girls. But be sure you marry a girl who has more in her heart and head than on her back. A sensible, praying, B ble reading girl is a fortune to any young man If she has but two plain dresses. Marry? Yes. Who? Marry tne girl wno is better ac quainted with the Bible and the Church than with the fashion maga zlnes and the follies of society. warn you against the girl who is al ways ready for the social gathering but cares nothing for the mis sionary society and the prayer meet ing. If you marry a "social func tion," it will fry the fat out of your purse. It will be to your everlasting good to marry the girl who hates debt and vain show, but loves the Bible, thg Church, and the mission ary society " VIII How to Keep Oat of Debt. Work regularly. Live within your salary. Keep away from places of amuse ment. Pray God's blessings upon your labors. Do the best work possible and don't play the fool by trying to keep up with the fast set. Remember, God helps those who try and keep on trying. One of the most success ful men I have ever known, had to sell out every fall to pay his debts. IX The Honest Man Who Can't Pay What must be done for the hon est man who just can't pay? Do like God does: Forgive him, and say brother: "Neither do I condemn thee, go and sin no more." Don't kick the man that's down. If you can, give him your hand. God has given you many chances. Give an honest brother another chance. "And be ye kind one to another, ten der hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." X The Greatest Debt. Our sins against God. Jesus died to pay the debt we owe. Take ref uge in Christ. He is our only hope You may die a pauper, -and reach Heaven through the blood of the ev erlasting covenant. Be rich in faith and love and good deeds. Don't think too much about other people's debts. but think much about the debt of love and faith and service we owe to God. Glory In the Cross. Set your heart upon heavenly things. Soon we must all stand before the Judge of all the earth. All secrets will be revealed. All wrongs right ed. Trust In Jesus to save you. Be honest. Be kind. Do all the good you can. There will be no rascals in Heaven. You may find It hard to make an honest living here, but you will be rich in Heaven. If you starve trying to provide things honest, you will reach Heaven that much sooner. Let professed Christians be honest. if the heavens fall.
