It begins to look very much like Gastonia is going to he forced to in voke the aid of the tate Corpora tion Commission or the courts, or hni) in nnler to secure from the Southern Railway a decent depot, one that will meet the requirements of the traffic at this point. The cit izens of Gastonia had hoped that the Southern would he willing to do the square thing voluntarily, hut it seems that they were mistaken. With the new year the owners of The Gazette expect to make several Improvements in the character of the paper. One feature will be a department every other week devot ed exclusively to the interests of the farms and the farmers of Gaston county. It will be edited by one of the most progressive and successful young farmers in the county and will deal with facts and problems right here at home. This feature alone will be worth the price of a year's subscription to every farmer In this section. Now is the time to subscribe. Southern Railway Tunu Ita A Urn- tion to Um Work of AdvertUlng the Land of the Sky. Special to The Gazette. WASHINGTON. D. C, Dec. 2. The Southern Railway Company, through its Land and Industrial De partment, Is taking steps to Inaugu rate a line of work recently outlined by President Finley In which West em North Carolina is especially In terested. Mr. M. A. Hays, who has had long experience In development work of all kinds as a representative of the Southern Railway and Industrial Department lu the New England, Eastern, Central. , western, and Northwestern States. Is to give spec ial attention for the present to Wes tern North Carolina, lie Is well equipped for this work by knowl edge of the resources and opportun ities of that region. He is making special study of those resources and opportunities and is to concen trate his work on a camiwilgn for more people and more industries for Western North Carolina. .Mr. Hays has opened an office of the Iind and Industrial Department In Harrisburg, l'enn., a convenient location for reaching a large extent of territory in whic h there are many people likely to become Interested In the Mountain and Piedmont sec tions of the South. In addition to the work which Mr. Hays will give his special at tention to. a trained horticultural and agricultural agent will be placed in Western North Carolina, with headquarters at Asheville, for edu rational and intensive demonstra tion work among tne farmers am fruit growers alreadv there and those who may settle in the region This agent will co-operate with the State Agricultural Department, the United States Department of Agri culture, and all other agencies en gaged in advancing the farming in terests of the section. Personals and Locals. iror Wi Come in now and look over our latest work and he convinced of the possibilities a few photographs have during the holiday season. Green's Studio. JIST A PLAIN LEMON. That's What the Southern Wants U Hand Gusfonin for a Passenger Depot Plans Call for Struct lire Practically Same Size as Present One and But Little Retler An On t rape. Just a plain sour dried-up lemon! That's what the Southern Railway Is preparing to hand Gastonia in the place of a new passenger depot. As to whether they succeed In doing so is another matter. It's nothing short of a outrage and every citizen who has seen the plans and specifications is unaltera bly opposed to the construction of such a shack as is proposed. There is no doubt whatever that any move on the part of the railroad to begin work on the structure as now planned will meet such opposi tion as will estop the work. If nec essary, an injunction may be ob tained and the case taken to the State Corporation Commission. The plans have been in Gastonia ( and one of the committee having the matter in charge informs The Ga zette that the building called for is about four feet larger each way than the present structure and is a brick veneer building, to be heated with coal stoves. It might cost five or six thousand dollars. In an early issue of The Gazette we will publish, for the benefit of the public, an article setting forth the situation thoroughly as to the amount of business done here, the present facilities and what will be required in order to give satisfactory depot facilities for the town. In the meantime every Gastonia citizen should make up his mind that the Southern Railway shall not be per mitted to foist off on the town a toy building which will be nothing more than a farce.
