Don't mis "The Target" at the Broadway today. James J. Hill, the great railroad magnate and financier, died Monday at St. Paul. Minn. Sunday a spe cial train was run from Chicago to St. Paul, a distance of 431 miles at aa average rate of 5 4 miles an hour, to carry to 'Hill's physicians a sup ply of a certain sedative that could not be obtained nearer. Garrison, will regret to learn that her father, Mr. W. F. Howe, died suddenly on May 22 at his home. Miss Howe was in Cincinnati when the news of her father's death reached her. The meeting- at the Baptist church has been well attended during the past week. Rev. J. W. Whitley, of the East Baptist church. Gastonia, has been doing the preaching. We had one sermon preached by Rev. J. L. Vipperman, of Mississippi, last Fri day night. Rev. Mr. Vipperman has been visiting his brother, Rev. David ViDDerman. our Dastor. Mr. Vipepr- man seemed to be glad to be back in Gaston county and McAdenville. A large congregation greeted him. Mr. R. R. Ray made a business trip to Charlotte last Friday. Rev. G. A. B. Holderby made a business trip to Gastonia last week. We are glad to state that all or ou sick are improved. Mr. Jack Skidmore, of Mt. Holly, attended our meeting one night last week. Mr. T. H. Marks, of Lancaster. passed through McAdenviHe Sunday and gave us some interesting facts regarding the many changes that had taken place since his last visit here. Mr. Marks is in his 81st year. Twenty-eight years ago he taught school in Gaston county and is well-known hv the older residents. He is the stepfather of Mrs. Joe Featherstone, of Belmont. Mrs. J. W. Little has been very shk for several days but is some what Improved at this time. Rev. David ViDDerman was called to Charlotte Sunday evening to join his brother, J. L. vipperman, in at tending the funeral of his sister, who died In High Point Saturday night. Miss Mary Bess Rowe, of Buford, da., is visiting her grand father, J. L. Webb, and other relatives here. Mrs. H. F. Gash, of Atlanta, is spending a few days with her niotu er, Mrs. George Abernetby. v Seven I'nited States soldiers en gaged and routed a gang of 20 Mexi can bandits last Thursday near Cru ces. Cervantes and Benomon, two much-wanted desperadoes and lead ers of the band, were killed by"Cor- poral Davis Marksbury. Only one of the seven soldiers was killed. Correspondence of The Gazette. GASTONIA. Route 1, May 29. At Mt. Olivet Methodist Episcopal church, three miles west of Gasto nia, the annual decoration services were held Sunday. Rev. Fred West, the 'pastor, preached at the 11 o'clock hour after which the congregation marched to the cemetery beside the church and decorated all of the graves. The good people of the community had cleared the rubbish and trash from the cemetery and the yard looked a great deal better. After the graves had been decor ated the good ladies of the churcn spread a most delightful lunch on the table. ' Shortly after lunch Mr. West a gain called the congregation togeth er and preached another sermon and greatly impressed all who beard him. On Saturday night he also held a service which was well attended. Mr. West has endeared himself into the hearts of all who know him. Henry Ford may go to Europe again in the interest of peace.
