Aside from the de lightful stories of Wild Animal v Ways, Mr. Ceton's drawings are al- ways clever and amusing. Oscar Wilde's beautiful tales have been ginning greater and greater appreciation and we hail with Joy these most delightful tales from this gifted author. "The Happy Prince and Other Fairy Tale6, is a splendid collection of stories that the grown ops will enjoy as thoroughly as tne children. "Tad and His Father." This sto ry of the home-life of Abraham Lin coln gives us a glimpse of the great eess and sweetness of Lincoln's na ture. The story tells of the period during which" Lincoln occupied tne White House, and of the strong bond that existed between the president and his son; Tad. as the boy was called, a typical boy, full of hign 1 1 irits and energy, he kept the house hold busy and the president was called daily to straighten out his difficulties. - We cannot read Lauris- toa Bullard s appreciation of Lin coln's life and character without feel ing greater respect and admiration or tne sterling qualities wblch are always associated with Lincoln, as an appreciation of Lincoln's nature, "Tad and His Father," should take a "prominent place among the trib utes to the memory of the Martyr President. 'Girls of the Morning Glory Camp Fire." As an organization the Camp Fire Girls has spread with wonder ful rapidity and appeals to both tne girls and their parents because Its teachings are the best. Althougn the writer, I sa belle Homibrook, has based ber story on the camp Ore work which she understands thor oughly. the book will be enjoyed to the utmost by every one who has tne good fortune to read It. The writer gives us Interesting glimpses of tne New England coast and her knowl edge of matters connected with tne sea adds greatly to the interest or the story. The book is full of inci dent and humor and will receive a most, hearty welcome. A Southern Summer Plan. Charlotte Obesrver. Mr. F. P. Hall, superintendent ot schools for Gaston county, has been long recognized as among the fore most educational promoters in North Carolina and be has just mapped out a new line of summer school endeav or taht will add to bis reputation. The town of Belmont has been se lected as the scene of summer school operations under a novel plan. Tbe scheme has been devised for the ben efit of the boys and girls of that sec tion and it will- provide both enter tainment and employment for them. As Mr. Hall, himself, expresses It, the Belmont venture "will be school without a text book." His plan is of a character that will inter est all advocates of education in tne State. Mr. Hall has made a begin ning with an enrollment of 100 boys and girls. He has placed the former inder charge of Mr, Ray Armstrong, of Gaston county. For the manage ment of tbe girls he has selected Miss Laura Watt, of Mecklenburg. There will be, no regular program. Tbe pupils meet at the school bouse in the mornings-and the instruction varies from story-telling to black board exercises. The aim of tne school is to keep tbe children off tne streets in the summer, and give them wholesome and instructive play so that they will develop physically and be better 'equipped for work when school begins next fall. Consequent ly the greater portion of the time is spent out of doors for physical de velopment. A tramp through tne woods, studying nature, or a lesson in swimming at the pool constitute some of the dail duties. Belmont is largely a, cotton mill town ana when school is over a number of boys and girls are not old enough to work , and are thrown upon tne streets. In order to avoid this, tne mill men of the town are supporting the experimental school for the en tertainment and instruction of tne children during vacation days. Tne time is pretty close at hand when the North and the balance of the country will be coming to the ckutn for the best ideas on education well as in all classes of welfare work. Oil the Clara Mill diamond Tuesday afternoon tbe Boogertown base-ball team defeated the team , from ' Pleasant Ridge. Tbe score was 11 to 3. ::x- Mr. Walter X. Rhyne left tbe nrst of the month for New YorK . city, where he will spend about two months attending the summer school of Columbia University. Mr. zinyne- nas accepted a position as principal of the schools of Walnut Cove, Stokes county, and will enter . upon his duties at tbe beginning or the fall term. The party of Charlotte educators who went over to Gastonia yesterday to make Inspection of the modern schools buildings and equipment wbich the school authorities of that city have placed at the service or the public, came back with emotions that rather conflicted. There was no attempt at concealing pride over tne manifest spirit of educational prog ress in Gastonia as exemplified in tne excellent buildings that have been provided and there was small at tempt at concealing disappointment that Charlotte is not able to "point with pride, same as Gastonia does. The Gastonia buildings one. at least represents the newest in de sign and equipment and the envious spirit was bard to repress. But ir C harlotte cannot just yet boast ot tbe latest in buildings and equipment, this ity can lay Just claim to one or the finest systems of education and to one of the finest examples in man agement that will be found any where.
