Mr. GrilBn, track inspector, was drowned, it is feared, as no re. port can be had from him. Just how many lost their lives cannot be told. One of the men rescued has made the statement that - there 'were 2$ on the bridge when it went down. 'Up to the present only five men have been rescued. This leaves probably twenty unaccounted for. meat made by Mr. W. W. Glenn, or this city. There Is no way to nrrive at , the exact loss to . the mill . and property nut the water was standing two feet deep in the second floor of the mill yesterday and lat night. The total loss will run : Into the thousands of dollars exclusive of tbe loss In orders and on contracts. $100,008 Bridge Gone. While the fever of excitement was hijrh on this account the big $100, 000 cement bridge just above was fast disappearing. Early Monday morn ing nothing whatever could be seen of it. The water was level with the steps on the front porch of Mr. J. M. Sloan's home at the western end of the bridge. This added much to his troubles as his wife was dead and the people were waiting for morning to bury her. It became necessary to remove the body at 2 a. m. Monday by way of a path, above the house as the macadam road leading to Bel' mont was submerged. ' As the waters receded Monday evening it became evident that a large v part - of "the structure, had been washed : away. Only one rim is left standing with the approach on - the 5 Gaston side. This is so badly undermined that its being of any further use is extremely doubtful. , - , ' . . " . . . The damage done in this section is undeterminable as yet. To endeavor to make an estimate would be of no value at this time. .. ? . At Spencer Mountain. Later rreports froal there today are to the . effect that more than , two feet of mud has settled la the pow er plant and a part of the machin ery has been ruined." a itaougn u is thought that he dynamos can be renovated and used again. Several weeks will bereqalred. however, to readjust the machinery, . at h mill 'the water i rose ; for several feet in the card room, the machinery f was partly submerged and a slight1 damage was done to mvom hundred 'balea of cotton in the warehouse.. The race near tbe lower end bf the dam broke througb for about 20 feet, which will cause the mill management: considerable damage and inconvenience.
