As Boon as the good people of Gastonia learned of the conditions prevailing In various sections of the county, they took Immediate steps to relieve those In need. To this end a handsome check was f orwared to Mt. Holly to be distributed among the flood sufferers. We have'nt words with which to thank these good folks. But we do appreciate this expression of good will ; and especially do we appreciate the big-hearted, whole-souled wayfn which this kindness was done. Correspondence of The Gazette. CAMP GLTNN, Aug. 3 Under the orders of the Secretary of War, Com pany B of the First Regiment will lose some of her married men with in ttye next few dys. A number have .filed applications but it is not yet certain Just how many of them will be approved by the War Depart ment. The pay rolls for the regiment have been made out and the entire regiment mustered so that it is now probable that the men of Company B will receive their pay Friday or Saturday. This event will occasion much Joy in the company, for t&e men, have been looking forward to it for some time. ' Company B has been on the target range and came off with a creditable showing, several of the men making very fine scores. Lieutenant Bern hardt has an especially fine record for the rapid fire, having made 15 bull's eyes out of 15 possibles. Each day now finds the entire company at work at driilB, hikes, patrols and practice marches. The men are rap- Idly getting Into form and are, begin ning to go through the drills snd marches with something of the ease of "regulars." New equipment Is being issued gradually and the com pany put in readiness to go in to ac tual service. It is thought that the First Regiment will probably be moved to Texas within the next 15 or 20 days, and it may be said that most of the men In Company B are anxious to be up and going.
