Thrilling, sensational, hair-raising these are but a few of the adject ives that might be used in describing the mammoth free acts provided by the management for the second an nual Gaston County Fair to be held in Gastonia October 3rd to 7th in clusive. One of these, the double barreled balloon ascension, will be seen here for the first time in the South. The balloonist ascends to a height of 4.000 feet. He is packed inside of a cannon attached to the balloon. At a pistol signal from tne ground he ignites an explosive which (boots him far out into space. He descends a thousand feet in a para chute and cuts away with anotner parachute. The cannon is automat ically cut away from the balloon and descends to the earth in a parachute of its own. It is the most daring aeronautic act ever seen in this country and is by it self worth a trip to the fair. On Wednesday the aeronaut will give a straight balloon ascension. Thurs day he will give the triple parachute cutaway, Friday he will give the bal loon ascension with me cannon act as described above. Saturday he will give a balloon ascension with a dou ble parachute cutaway. If you fail to see this you have missed some thing that you may never have an pportunity to see again. Another free act is that by Miss Margaret Quincy, the famous high diver and fancy swimmer. Miss Quincy dives from a height of 75 feet into a pool of water three and a half feet deep and gives dally exhibi- ong of fancy swimming. This is a igniflcent act and one you cannot ord to miss. HAPPY JACK, THE FAT MAX. Happy Jack Eckert, of Georgia, will be among the visitors to the Gaston County Fair next week. Mr. Eckert enjoys the distinction of be ing the largest Elk in America, and was one of the honored guests at the big Elk's convention at Reading, Pa., last August. He will attract consid erable attention in Gastonia, for he weighs 739 pounds, but he denies the allegation that he is fat. claim ing that he is built in proportion, measuring eight feet, seven inches around the waist and seven feet around the chest, with limbs only in proportion to carry his ereat w'eight. "Happy Jack," as he is universal ly known among his friends and ac quaintances, is not handicapped by his size but is agile and gets about readily. His requirements are some what unusual for his method or travel is by either baggage or box car. he is too large to enter the door of any ordinary coach or Pullman. When getting about the town he rides on a truck and uses a large chair and a pair of steps which ne carries with him, made especially to hold his 739 pounds. Happy Jack is good-natured, heal thy and contented, and every after noon and evening he will be found a the carnival entertaining crowds of Interested people, and showing the various medals he has been awarded for being the biggest man in' tne United States. DANDY DIXIF, MINSTRELS. One of the feature attractions with the Great American Shows is the Old .Plantation (Show, known as the Dandy Dixie Minstrels. It con sists of twelve clever colored people who can both sing and dance, and among whom are comedians who are really funny. Molly Pocel, the leading woman, has made a reputation as a buck-and-wing dancer, with a style of her own that is out of the ordinary. George Robinson, the leading comedian, succeeds in keeping the audience laughing every minute that he Is on the stage. The costumes of the performers are attractive and everything about the show aids in making it worth the price of admission. Bill Roberts sings high-class bal lads in a tenor voice which would bring him fame and fortune if he on ly had the opportunity to cultivate it. Altogether the plantation show has been proving a winner wherever the Great American Shows have played and those who visit it during Fair week are sure of a good laugh and an enjoyable half-hour. WONDERLAND. Wonderland is the place where you find a collection of unique peo ple and animals gathered from all four corners of the earth. The way to really enjoy a show such as this is to talk to the unusual people, they are always willing to answer questions, and usually they prove to be very interesting people. Then the collection of animals should interest everybody, the moth er monkey with her babies seems to be very near to human in the way she handles the little ones. There ts a monster bear and a tiny cub, both of them remarkably intelligent. Snakes from all parts of the world are in the care of a young girl who willingly answers all questions con cerning them, for she understands and loves her pets. There are also lions and birds of all kinds, together with the people who are usually termed "freaks," none of which are repulsive, but sure to prove entertaining to all w ho visit Wonderland at the Fair. THE MAN-EATING SHARK. A new attraction iias been added to the list of the Great American Shows, it is a man-eating shark. 12 feet long. This shark was captured off the coast of New Jersey after hav ing killed two men. To those who have read in the daily papers ol these horrible monsters and how they infest the coast waters of late this immense shark should prove very interesting. It will be found in glass tank made especially for It d in which it is preserved and kept perfect condition by embalming d. The young man who is In -ee of this great sea monster 'y answers questions and tells of s and their habits. is undoubtedly the most per ecimen ever caught and well visit. e other fellow worry. Wonderful New Attraction Secured - for Midway at the Fair Shows How Submarines Operate. One of 'the most popular of the many attractions with the Great American Shows, the carnival com pany which comes to Gastonia for the week of October 2nd, is the Startzell Submarine Show, with Its working models of Uncle Sam's sub marine boats. Mr. Startzell gives a clever talk on submarines and their uses, at the same time conducting a sham battle with perfect models of the various types of these terrible fighting machines. The watcher sees the enemy"s dreadnaught approaching and tne quick action of the submarine of the new type as it comes up broadside, fires a shot and dives instantly, fin ally sinking the battleship. The ex hibitor shows a model of the old type of submarine which works by motor power for which it needs stor age batteries, also demonstrating the method of using the compressed air and water ballast. In comparison with this comes the latest invention in submarines, which is the work or Capt. Stancey, of Hamilton, Ohio, an ex-subniarine sailor who is at pres ent building these boats for the gov ernment. This new type resembles a fish in its movements in the water, it w orKs entirely by motors, with propellers fore and aft, and carries no water ballast, in action it is the quickest and wickedest under-water worker ever known. It also carries a safety device by means of which, should the machinery go wrong, the boat will return to the surface of Its own ac cord. All these and many more in teresting facts Mr. Startzell tells a bout these machines of war and now that "war and the rumors of war," are taking up so much space in the daily papers submarines are some thing everybody wants to know about. The models are presented in an immense glass tank which Is mounted on an automobile truck made especially for it, the water is clear and all the under-water mane uvers are plainly seen through tne glass. The Great American Shows management are justly proud of Mr. Startzell's submarine show for it is not only a novelty, but something that both the grown kiddies want to see. folks and tne THE SILODROME. The Silodrome with the Great American chows has won much Ta forable comment wherever the shows have played. It differs from the usu al motordrome carried by most car nivals in that the sides are perpen dicular and the daring riders race at break-neck speed around them, per forming many stunts of trick-riding that are unique and unusual. Dare-devil Zeke is the star rider and his performance Is one that holds the spectators breathless at all times. For those who enjoy thrills the Silodrome is the place, there is never a dull minute while the show is go ing on. THE MIRACLE SHOW. In the Miracle Show at the carni val will be found four of the most mysterious illusions ever ofTered for public approval. The usual illusion show offers just one attraction but in the Miracle with the Great American Shows there are four, each one more puzzling than the one before. These illusions are very artistic and beau tiful, also they give all who see them plenty to think over and wonder about for they are just what the bal lyhoo man claims them to be. "mys terious and puzzling.'" A WOltD TO YOUNG MEN. Young man do you know that you are expected to be at the fair accom panied with the girl of your choice? We not only count upon your pres ence and your friends anticipate it, but the girl looks forward to tne trip, and you will do wrong to dis appoint us all. Don't run the rish of being thought bashful or stingy, but engage the girl at once, and if necessary get two girls. Girls never look so bewitchingly beautiful and fine as when dressed In holiday at tire appropriate for a day at the fair. Among so many affecting scenes there is no better place to train tne affections, and Cupid's arrow shot by beaux who gallant the fair sex hither and thither and talk familiar ly over the objects of interest, sel dom "misses the mark. The young mei- of the times and girls of tne net led always go to the fair, and many a happy marriage is the sequel to a courtship that had It beginning in the inspiring scenes of a rural fair ground. If you have any farming problem that are worrying you. come to the Gaston County Fair and ask J. M. Gray, farm demonstrator for Gaston county. He'll help you solve them. Murphy's Busy City. A complete city, train, depot, blacksmith shop, cutting wood and numerous other things. . . BOYS AND GIRLS PIG CLUB WORK. During the year there has been placed with' the members of the Pig .Club about thirty registered Berk shire sow pigs. Besides these there are a number of members who have good hogs for meat purposes only. Many of these boys and girls are go ing to exhibit their animals and show to the farmers of the county that hogs can be grown economically and at a profit. They are producing this year meat at less than half the price the merchant is charging for fat back. What does this mean to the farmers of the county? To some it is only an idle tale, to others it means the difference between profit and loss, the difference between fat back and ham for breakfast. These boys and girls are not guess ing that they are making a profit from their hogs. Each one is keep ing records of the cost of the p'g. weight when purchased, cost of feed (including pasture), and the weight at killing time; or if it is used for breeding, the weight at the end of each four months until mature. Some of the results from this careful wprk will be on exhibit for every one to see and judge for themselves whether or not there is a profit in hogs. It is also planned to have a model farm laid out for the best crops for hog raising with a model hog house and a family of hogs occupying them. Some one will be in charge of these exhibits w ho will be able to ex plain any points any one may wish to bring out and to give suggestions as to the management of hogs on the farm. THINGS TO BE REMEMBERED. Progress is born of experience, and no place has yet been suggested where so much experience can be had in so short a time and at so lit tle expense as at our fair. One of the subllmest things in the world is the plain truth, and when we say that the fair this year will be excellent, we want it understood that we mean to be forcible as well as sublime. The golden moments in the stream of life rush past us, and if we see nothing but the ripple of the waves we get the shadow without the sud stance. It Is only they who attend our fairs that see the current and are making the most of time as It flies. If you wish to behold the greatest of great things, the biggest of big things, tha choicest of choice things, the most useful of useful things, the most interesting of interesting things, the most attractive of attrac tive things, the most amusing of amusing things, in fact, a little of everything and the climax of all the great and good things worthy of vis iting and studying, the fair is the placo to go. POULTRY SHOW IS FEATURE. The poultry show of the Gaston County Fair will be one of the real features this year. The finest fowls of the Piedmont section will be shown by the hundred, and the aris tocratic birds will be seen to advant age in the special tent provided for them. This show is presented each year by the poultry fanciers, who give liberally of their time and money to promote the poultry Industry of this section. Modern and uniform cooping will be used, with capacity of several hundred specimens. Clean competition is offered. The show Is open. The management con siders itself especially fortunate in having been able to secure the servi ces of Mr. F. J. Marshall, conceded to be one of the best judges of poul try in the entire South. Mr. Mar shall has not only had the distinc tion of acting in the capacity of judge at a large number of the leading fairs in the South, but at the last three World's Expositions. The ben efit of this man's advice and wide experience will be almost invaluable to the exhibitors. That your birds will be well cared for you will readily agree when you learn that we have engaged the serv ices of Mr. E. G. Warden, of the Xev in Poultry Farm. Mecklenburg coun ty, X. C. Mr. Warden will act both in" the capacity of secretary and su perintendent. He has had years of experience in this kind of work, and is not only competent but entirely re liable. The work of the members of the Boys Corn Club is pretty well known over the county. To place it before the people in a more Impressive man ner there has been a space alotted to these boys. There they will show some of the products that they are growing and also some of the results of the work during the past few years. Few farmers in Gaston county realize that the boys of the county can take an acre on any farm and within one year s time double tne corn crop of that acre and consider ably lessen the cost of production per bushel. This is being done every year by boys. Some -of the reasons tor this increase in production and decrease in cost will be explained here in such a way that any one can 1 understand and follow the principles governing this production. Every one should see these exhibits and learn why it is that the boys of North Carolina average over sixty bushels of corn to the acre while therr fathers only average between nine teen and twenty. PREPAREDNESS. The watchword of the hour Is "Preparedness." Our Nation is be ing mobilized, but the military feat ure is only a part. The .Na tion is mobilizing, and the Gaston County Fair, October :!, 4, .", 6 7. 1916. is to be the concentration cam. for the best efforts of Gaston county. The fair is preparing to show each individual attending this concentra tion camp a magnificent series or ex hibits of the egricultural and Indus trial progress of Gaston county. Ex hibits in which every one taking a part will have taken stock of what he has accomplished, and get in spiration for greater progress. The Gaston County Fair is playing its part in this general spirit of pre paredness. Do you want to play your part in the preparedness pro paganda? Then, prepare to come to the Gaston County Fair, Octobe"r .1, 4. .", 6, 7. 1916, and bring the whole family. Fun for both old and young, and a good time for all. The most daring motorcycle rid ers you have ever seen. Don't miss the motor drome. A large tent full of dazzling and wonderful miracles. The most com plete miracle show on the road. ii (XRX CLUB AND PIG CLUB BOYS SPECIAL SPACES. The progress of the boys and girls of the Boys' Corn Club and the Boys' Pig Club takes rank with the great ets achievements of the farm devel opment and Improvement work now being carried on in the South. This special work has met with instanta neous success. The Boys' Corn Club will display their products in a special tent pro vided for them. The club is organiz ed under the direction of the county demonstration agent, Mr. J. M. Gray, and the exhibits are under his di rect supervision. Considerable in terest has been manifested by the boys, and that their displays will be large and creditable is sure. The Boys' Pig Club will be there in full force. A new and modern pig barn has been erected, and a spare for the boys set aside. Indica tions are that so large will be the entries in this department that evea though the room provided Is three times that of last year, it will be crowded. Its enthusiastic appreciation of this work is expressed by the fair management in offering special prize lists to both the Boys' Corn Club and the Boys' Pig Club. MUSIC IN PLENTY AT FAIR. Two RrasN Bunds Playing for Your Pleasure. There wMll be music in plenty at Gaston County's Second Annual Fair October 3rd to 7th, inclusive.
