We learn that in the neighbor hood of Cherryville two young peo ple engaged to be married on a cer tain day, and so certain was the bride that the knot would be tied that she bought her wedding outfit and all other arrangements were made. She . even had prepared an excellent feast of good things but she received a note from her affianced telling of circumstances beyond his control and which prevented his mar rying at that time, but that he would call again in the Fall. Tho Commencement. (Prom The Gazette of May 25, '83.) The closing exercises of the Gas tonia High School began at the acad v emy on the evening of the 23 rd. The new Presbyterian church ol this place will be dedicated on Sat urday before the second Sabbath in June and the Lord's supper will be administered on the Sabbath. Rev. T. L. keeper will preach the dedica tion sermon at 11 o'clock and Rev. R. Z. Johnson will assist Id the ded ication services. Dallas Dots. ( From The Gazette of June 1. 'S3.) ine picnic last Saturday was a grand success. The Southern "Stars' of Llncolnton, were here as tne guests of the Dallas Light Infantry. Music was furnished by the Dallas Cornet Band. Though a very large crowd was in attendance, the affair passed off in a very pleasant and sat isfactory manner. The commencement exercises of the Gaston High School will be held here In the court house. The many friends of Hon. J. H. White will regret to learn he is in feeblu health. Lawson Rozzell, a deaf and dumb man, who is one of our best farmers, reports tne nnest prospects tor wa termelons of any one in the River Bend section. Mr. Rozzell married a deaf and dumb lady. It is dated December 2 1st. It is in magazine style, sixty four pages, and is profusely illus trated with cuts showing natural scenery. Industrial plants, business houses, etc., in and around Waynes ville. Mr. J. D. Boone is editor or The Mountaineer. This special edi tion was gotten out for him by Mr. B. H. DePriest. formerly of Shelby. They both deserve to be highly con gratulated upon the excellence of this piece of work. It will prove a splendid advertisement for that sec tlon of the State. SOUTHERN RAILWAY'S REPORT. Special to The Gazette. WASHINGTON, D. C, Jan. 1. Results of operation of the Southern Railway Company for November, 1916, and for the Ave months ended November 30th, compared with the same month and period in 1915, ex clusive of interest, rentals and other income charges, were announced to day by Comptroller A. H. Plant, as follows: Gross revenue, Nov. 1916, $7, 086,498, an increase of $965,868 or 15.78 per cent; operating expenses, taxes and uncollectible railway reve nue; Nov. 1916, $4,724,076, an In crease of $603,694 or 14.65 per cent. Corresponding results for the five months' periods: Gross revenue this year $32,840,658, an increase of $4,153,890 or 14.48 per cent; oper ating expenses, taxes and uncollect! ble railway revenues this year $22.- 902.621. an increase of $2,631,43;; or 1 2.98 per cent. The Southern Railway disbursed during November, for labor, materi al, supplies and other purposes, JC- 359.601 of which $5,023,109 or 78. 98 per cent was paid to individuals and industries located in the Soutn, this sum being $62,551 in excess of the total moneys contributed by tne South for transportation purposes. For Improvements to Its roadway and structures, the Southern spent $1,400,156.42 in Nov. 1916, as a- gainst . $624,927.37 during Nov. 1915; during the five months ended Nov. 30. $6,1 37.383. 80- as against $2,787,764.72 in 1915. C, Jan. 1. Commenting on the report of the I'nited States Agricultural Depart ment on the area of winter wheat, sown this year in comparison witn last year. President Harrison, of the Southern Railway Company, safd: "The figures show a "gratifylnp tendency in the direction of crop di versification. In every Southern State traversed by Southern Rail way lines, except Kentucky and Ten nessee, the acreage reported this year shows a substantial Increase over last year. Kentucky shows a decrease and the acreage In 'Tennes see is the same as last year. The largest increases are shown in Geor gia. Alabama and Mississippi States into which the cotton boll weevil lias spread.
