THE GA5TOMA GAZETTE. PACE EKVin THE MOUNTAIN COUNTIES LEAD. Have liigneet Birth Rate and Lowest Deatfc Rata Says Report of Bute Board of Health - Lack of Negro , Population Cause For Low Death. Rate In Mountain Section. (Stale Board of Health' Bulletin.) From figures contained In the 1915-1916 Biennial Report of the State Board of 'Health, which is just from the press, the mountain coun ties of the State are far outstripping the piedmont and eastern counties in the number of births per year per 1,000 population. McDowell County, with the high rate of 58.6, leads the State, while Clay and Yancey follow with, a rate of 49.6 for Clay and 48.4 for Tancey. Following are Macon with a rate of 45.4: Alexander. 40.7; Wilkes. 40.4: Atery, Caldwell and Watauga, each with a rate of 29.7. while there are many other' moun tain counties that surpass the aver age birth rate of the State. The only eastern counties that are admitted into this class are Greene, with a birth rate of 43.5; Martin, 41.9: Warren, 41.8: Bladen and Tyrrell, each 41.3, and Gates 39.8. No piedmont counties are quite so prosperous as far as in crease in population is concerned. The counties haying the lowest birth rates are Camden, with the low rate of 18.8; Madison, 22.7; Durham. 24.7; Almanace, 25.9; Mecklenburg, 26.4; Craven, 27.7; Moore, 28.2; Guilford, 28.4 and Alleghany, 28.6. . The mountain counties come In also for the, lowest death rates. 8waln leads with a rate of 7.0. while Avery. Mitchell and Watauga follow .with 8.0. The counties having the next lowest death rates are Caldwell, 8.2: Cherokee, 8.4: Yancey. 8.6; Graham and Union. 9.2; Jackson, 9.3; Pamli co. 9.4; Brunswick. 9.5; Alleghany, 9.6; Stokes. 9.7: Ashe and Ruther ford. 9.9. The exceptionally low death rate of these counties, as explained in tne report, in comparison with other counties of the state is easily ac counted for in taht all these counties, with the exception of Un ion, Pamlico and Brunswick, have less than 15 per cent colored popu lation and It is a well-known rule in health work that as the colored pop ulstlon Increases, the death fate in creases, and vice versa. j - didate for the offlce of mayor of the city of Gastonla subject to the ac tion of the voters at the election to be held in-May.
