"'- ; JtPromTtft Gazette of Apr. 24. '85.) - The dull season has arrived. JJe farmers have gone to Fork and for awhile the guano-dlstributor and the cotton seed planter will be busy .crop. Judging from the sales pi fHand, Wi Can safely predict, if the easoni are favorable, there will b a larger cotton trade at this place next fall than aver bifore. The sales In 1884-85 were nearly a thousand balet greater than in 1883-M. and - there Is no reason why we should not push the cotton business up to ' 5,000 bales next season. In view or these possibilities we do not regret the present dull period knowing as : we do that it means increased busi- '. ness next fall. for a long time editor of The Gazette, is in town pn a visit. Thes Fires Did a Total Estimated Damage of 8,JWO Jiumed Over ij:F2 Acres in Four Township letroyiitg 2I.OOO Foet of Mer chantable Timber Ttye Causes and the Remedy. The reports on forest fires during 1916 for the various townships of Gaston county have been received and compiled by the State Forester. These reports reveal some startling figures relative to the damage these fires did in four of the six townships over the county, Correspondents from seven locali ties In the four townships reported 16 fires which burned over 1,31? acres. It M estimated tfeat feet of merchantable tf$r w8 (Jer tH$ed Valued at $2,802, that "l. 838 arreil 6t y6uHg growth were buHldd" Over, valued at $3,000, and that other products and improve ments destroyed by these fires, such as cordwood, lumber, fences, barns, etc., amounted to $2,595. maikng a total estimated loss of $8,530. It is estimated that $133 was spent in an effort to extinguish the fires. A study of the causes of these fires show that five were set toy burning brush, one by hunters, five by railroads, three by campers, one was Incendiary, and one was of un known origin. The forestry division of the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey, which is giving publicity to these facts, states that the people or Gaston county should not be indif ferent to such losses, especially when those best Informed upon the matter claim that most of the fires could have been prevented by proper meas ures. When it is realized that one of the State s chief assets is her fore-' f i i jil!ia forests, the. Jeopardizing not, only of our present timber Bupply but also of our future supplies be comes a Very serious matter. The establishment of an effective system of forest fire patrol by the State would do much toward eliminating the waste, and, in view of the fact that fires do not recognize state or township lines, such a system should be under State supervision. It is hoped that the people of Gas ton county will become aroused to this situation and see to it that their representatives in the next Legisla ture are alive to the importance of this question. OFFICIALS TO MEET EMERGENCY JUNE 5 WASHINGTON, May 31. Disor der and possibly rioting are expected registration day by the officials here. The discovery of anti-registration plots and the flight of many young men to Cuba and Mexico has convinc ed officials that the day is not likely to pass quietly. Wide powers have been granted both State and Federal authorities to meet any situation that may arise, and troops may be called out by lo cal officials to quell Berious disturb ances if any occur. The Department of Justice increas ed its campaign against agitators who were trying to thwart the selec tive draft registration law when It wired every agent to submit steno graphic reports of all speeches made against the conscription law. Whole sale arrests are expected to follow the perusal of these reports by the Department officials bora. U-BOAT MENACE BEING MASTERED (By International S'ews Service.! LONDON, May 31. Today ends the four months period during which Germany boasted that her submarines would bring England to her knees. England not only Is still upon her feet but the losses from submarines are growing less. Admiralty reports of losses Tor the past week are le98 than any pre vious week since March 11. During the period from May 7 to 27 only one ship was sunk out of every 23; en tering or leaving British ports, while during the period of April 16 to May 16 the ratio was one out of every 100 ships. With offens ives under way on Italian and west ern fronts, the indications today were that Germany has abandoned hopes that Russia and Roumanla wiil not wage active warfare and is pre paring to meet the drive on the east ern front. Large German forces ac enmnanied by naval guns and gun ners have been sent to the eastern line. Reports today state that Austria is calling on Germany for aid on tne Italian front if Trieste is to be sav ed. After severe battles the British and French have gained a complete mastery of the air on the western front. Marriage will not save a man from the draft. Only those with depednents will be exempted. Even in their case this applies to first call only. This was made plain at the war department today. Secretary Baker declared that the government would install machinery to make certain that tne dependents were real and not mere ly semi-dependants. H appeared certain today that a Man who is the sole support of a de pendent wife, child or mother will not be called on the first draft. Oth er exemptions include government employes, men working on govern ment contracts, expert mechanics in ship yards, gun and Ammunition fac tories and similar establishments and the physically unfit. Exemption boards already are be ing established, one for each 30.000 of population in cities and ror each county In the rural districts. Review boards to which those refused ex emption to carry an appeal w ill be es tablished in each judicial district. For Saturday and Sunday only I.- 336 recruits were brought Into the service. Since war was declared &r,27fi have volunteered leaving a requirement of about 98.000 to bring the regular army to war strength. New York led in the days report with 1 4 K against 128 for Pennsylvania and 121 for Illinois. With every energy concentrated toward raising an army of 1.200,000 the war department today tooK oc casion to declare that the official statement of the British government that 1 00.000 Americans with 3. ".00 battle planes and fi.000 aviators would soon be at the European front was 'slightly exaggerated." Other than the Pershing force no other expeditions are contemplated for the present.
