FRANCE, June 7. Our pursuit pi

and chased three kilometers inside
the German lines, where the attack
was made at close range. The Amer
ican got under the tail of the German
machine. After a few shots the Ger

PARIS, June 7. The Initiative In
the battle has now swung to the aide
of the Allies. Their attacks : are
growing in strength and the exhaust

Minor activities are reported on the

firmed report says that the steamship
Argonaut, carrying 16,000 bales of

northwest of Chateau Thierry on the
Marne front was reported by the war
office at noon. Heavy fighting Is tak
ing place at points between the
Ourcq and Marne rivers. Americans
advanced In the Torcy, Bemeaud,
Bouresches line after a furious strug
gle. Nearby the French strongly as
saulted, taking hill 204. The French
made fresh progress east of Veuilly
and Laporterie. North and south of
the Aisne the French extended and
improved their positions. The Brit
ish joined in a counter offensive cap
turing ground between Rheinis and
the Marne river. Only cannonading
was reported elsewhere. The Ger
man lines were raided by the French
west of Noyon and prisoners take':.
Other successful raids were carrie-1
out near Montdidier.
WASHINGTON, June 7. Because
the rush of new registrants to enlist
in the army is so great. Gen. Crowd
er today ordered draft boards not to
permit further enlistment of newly
registered men now.
WITH THE AMERICANS AT THE
MARNE, June 7. Severe fighting
northwest of Chateau-Thierry with
Americans engaged, continued this
morning. The Marines, who lauch
ed two successful attacks yesterday,
gained all their objectives excepting
one point, where they were held up
by a nest of German machine guns
In a small wooded position to their
right. The Marines swept on, cap
turing Torcy village. The Germans
repeatedly counter attacked but were
unable to retake the village. Ameri
cans swarmed in upon the German
machine gun emplacements around
Bouresches Just north of Thierry,
bayonettlng the Germans at their
guns. Other Boches attempting to
make a stand in the streets were cap
tured. Late last night the Germans
made a sudden counter attack on the
American infantry on the right bank
of the Marne, forcing tbem to give
ground at one point. The Americans
Immediately counter attacked and
this morning are slowly driving the
Boches back despite a torrent of
