Sufficiently eomplete reports are not ' yet in hand to enable us to judge how well Gaston people are responding to the Bed Cross Christmas Roll Call which is a this week. In Gastonia the response so far has been very liberal but there are till hundreds of people in Gastonia and suburbs who have not given their names ' for membership. All it requires is a "heart and a dollar." Ia view of the fact, as announce, that the Bed Cross is not going to make any more campaigns for contribution)! and the further fact that no Christmas Seals are being sold, it would seem that every grown person at least should hasten to join this organization. The children, too, should have a part in it by having their Barnes on the membership roll. Although the war is over the Red Cross has before it immense tasks in the aear future which will demand large asms of money. There is much relief work to be done in nearly all the coun tries of the world. So "have a heart" and dig up a dol lar thia week for the Red C ross. If bv any means the solicitors have missed you, hunt them up. Chandler Six, "Famous for its marvel- motor." Can only deliver one be fore Christmas. Hurry. W. H. I Two matters worthy of the very seri I oub consideration of Gaatonians were dis ; cussed at the annual meeting of the ! membership of the Chamber of Com- 'merce Tuesday night. Other matters of interest were talked of also but these were paramount. They were the ques I ions of the establishment by the city of ! a board of health with some real powers, given it by special act of the General As sembly, including the employment at a good salary of a whole-time health offi cer, and the establishment of a Y. M. C. A. for the lenefit of the young men of the town. I'nfortunately The Gazette is so crowd ed with advertising this week that it hasu 't the space to enter right now into a full discussion of the merits of the? two propositions. Very soon, however, we expect to give both of these propsi tions the publicity they deserve. Today we merely take space to say that The Ga zette is heartily in favor of both these movements. In saying this we are sim ply reiferating a statement made fre quently in the course of the past few years. The Gazette has leen a persistent advocate of better health laws and bet ter methods of enforcing them and also of the establishment of a modern Y. M. '. A. for the city. We have reasons for supporting both of these and will give them s !). In the meantime we suggest that lias tonians as a whole take some thought on these things. We invite the people of the t'jwn to use the columns of The (ia zette to give their views on these and other important subjects of public inter est. Only three more days to buy Christ mas presents.
