While it is hardly neeessarv it might a!s l.e :.id that this condemnation of those who drive recklessly is nut made in order to prejudice the owners of automobiles. Rather it is made for the sake of t he youth and the old age, the lives of whom are daily being endangered because of the greatly increasing number of ."peed maniacs. The speed fiends are not crim inals. I hey arc louf.tless goo. An interesting story, printed else where in today's Gazette, tells that Con gressman E. V. Webb, of the ninth .lis trict, is not to he named federal judge to sueceed Judge .lames K. Boyd at any time in the near future. This story comes from Judge Boyd's home city, Greentdioro. While the judge is not him self quoted it doubtless conies direct from him and may he taken as expressing his sentiments. For some time it has been thought that Judge Boyd would resign owing to his advanced age. If he does step down there is no doubt but that Mr. Webb would le named as his successor. But now the word comes from Greensboro that Judge Boyd is anything but ready to retire. Under the law the president may think that he i physically or men tally unfit to perform his duties. If he is so satisfied then there would be no dif ficulty in replacing him with Mr. Webb. Late reports from Judge Boyd, however, are to the effect that he is in tin- pink of health and surely there are m ne who would say that the judge i unsound mentally. Judge Boyd, it is stated, in tends to hold on to his federal position, which is a life-time appointment, until a republican president sits in the white house then he will resign and allow the vacancy to be filled by one of his own political faith. It is the opinion of many that the president would not arbi trarily displace Judge Boyd on political grounds. The case will be watched with interest. LET'S PUT IT OVER. Gastonia and Gaston county have never yet fallen down when called upon to do their part in any worthy enterprise. Ev ery war work drive and every govern ment bond campaign has met with a ready response and in every single in stanee up to the present time tiie county Las "gone over the top," almost always doing more than she was asked to do. Indications are, however, that Gaston is going to fall down on the present Sal vation Army drive unless more interest is manifested in the next few .lays than has leen thus far in the campaign. As will be seen from the figures elsewhere in today's Gazette, Gastonia has so far subscribed about f 2,.'J'K) and only !.; has been rejorted from the county outside of Habitual Constipation Cured ill 14 to 21 Days -LAX-FOS WITH PEPSIN is a specially prepared Syrup Tonic-Laxative for Habitual Constipation.
