We suppose that the State board knew nothing whatever either for or against Mr. Porter, the aj pointee, but was guaging his ability b .he salary he ac.apted. He was promise: fi salary of $125 per month and with this ie wan to furnish and keep up his own automobile. lhe powers that be in Mecklenburg ev idently look upon the job in a different aspect from other counties which a paving salaries ranging from l'.imiii to $;;,0O(i. This office is a very important one and the incumbent can perform a Taluable service. He should be a man of vision and foresight. The office will de pend largely upon what the man makes of it. It may become a useless .job with the incumbent drawing down a good sal ary, or it may be the instrument of great good. A committee representing the tobacco workers' unions of Winston-Salem met with the officials of the K. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., by appointment, Friday and demanded an eight hour work day, with present day pay, together with the re turn of former employes to work at once. The committee was given a courteous hearing. There are only .1.000 taxi.abs on the streets of London todav as compared with 9.000 in lu14.
