ALONG BANKS OF TSCS EFFECTS OF WAS ASE SEEN. (By The Associated Press) DIXMTTDE, Belgium, 8ept. 22 Lin ing the banks of the Yser river, far as the eye can see, are the trenches which for so many months during the war were occupied by' the Belgian ami German armies, the Belgians on the south bank ami the Germans on the north. They still Ix'a many marks of shell ami rifle fire, ami mouldy straw lying on the damp floors still convey some idea of the hard ships to which the soldiers were subject ed. On the German side of the river is a dugout, built to resist the heaviest pro jectiles, and cool even on a hot day. It was a favorite gathering spot for the Germans when the fighting was fiercest, but now serves the most useful purpose of a refrigerator. Instead of the bunks and chairs which once lined its sides one now sees pile upon pile of beer cases, filled with refreshments for the soldiers guard at work cleaning up the ground. Behind the dugout, the bodies of three soldiers two Belgians and one German were buried on the bank of a tiny pond, made by bursting shells. Little crosses marking the resting place and over them poppies nod. Along the Yser one may plainly see the effects of the hard fought battle. Here ami there the top of a dougout has been crushed in, and further along the duck boards from an abandoned trench may be seen sticking through the mud. With in sight of the bridge, the muzzle of a field piece, rusted and useless, points to the sky. Much of the derbis of the battlefield has already been collected. Miles upon miles of bVirbed wire have been re claimed from the entanglements. Ger man and allied, which stretched in front of the lilies but at some points along the river bank the old entanglements still remain, rusted and twisted on stakes which arc last tailing into the ground. There arc treat idles of reeled wire which has not been unwound since it left tin wire mills, while the military telephone systems are still stretched upon short stakes. The people of Iimndc. like the peo ple of cvci.v other destroyed Belgian town, are gradually returning to the mills of their homes. The help being given them by the government is giving them heart and strength to bi-gin life over again. Here one may see a man patching up a shell hole in his house with a few bricks taken from the ruins of his neighbor's home, and in another place men, ami women too. are patching a roof. But these instances are few. In most cases the destruction was so complete that nothing is left for the poor Belgian but to build a new house. But the people are happy and cheer ful. They go about their work with laces and merry laughter. They are back home. The Reason For It. Waxhavv Enterprise. Much comment has been occasioned re cently by the Lancaster cotton buyers jiaving much more for cotton than buy ers at Waxhaw, Monroe or Charlotte. The writer was in Lancaster one day last week and asked several of the business men there the reason for this, and they said that Col. Springs returned from a trip to New York a couple of weeks ago and issued orders to his buyers to stock up on cotton at whatever price it took to get it. A irdingly his buyers began paying a little more than other markets and they have kept a cent or two ahead of the market ever since. The condition is only temporary and when it is past the Lam-aster market will probably slump back to its normal place of a little below Waxhavv and Monroe. But while it lasts it is a bonanza for the farmers and they are hauling it from all over this section to Lancaster. One day last week Lan caster pai 1 out about $7.,i(i(i for cotton. United States Bureau of Standard tests have shown that concrete made with (oarse gravel withstands lea: less danger or disintegration if prote. t i bv a coat' li g of cement nn inch thi.-'; rein forced with wire mesh. An English inventor's telephone for use in mining or where explosive gases or liquids are present is claimed to be ex plosive and flame proof. KEPT HER AWAKE He Terrible Pains in Back and - Sides.
