Auto of Future May Not Use
Brakes on Any of Its Wheels

■ It sounds like heresy, coming
from a traffic safety advocate, bat
i the automobile of the future may
not have any brakes on the wheels.
Reason is they are notoriously
ineffective at high speeds on wet
or. icy surfaces.
This startling auto “believe-it-or
not”' comes from Andrew J. White,
/director of Motor Vehicle Research,
Inc., a privately financed proving
ground for autos and trucks in
South Lee. N. H.
White goes on to say, “Our pres
ent braking system is antiquated
and might be the cause bf a large
proportion of accidents and injur
ies due to the present design that
is rapidly becoming obsolete.” ’
Obsolete, did he say? And how,
White continues. “This modern
four-wheel hydraulic braking sys
tem is capable of holding up to 90
per cent of the weight of the car
but available friction between the
tire and the road seldom exceeds
80 per cent on clean, dry pavement.

braking system becomes almost use

So .what's the answer? If they
take the brakes off the wheels
where we’ve kinda got accustomed
to having them, what's to stop the
car?
White suggests improved automa
tic transmissions of the future may
provide a more efficient stopping
formula.
"Some automatic transmissions
provide braking efficiencies on ice
or slippery surfaces of more use
for the average driver than con
ventional brakes which may lock.
This type of dynamic braking is
used on military tanks and is be
ing considered for highway trucks
at the present time.
"Our tests on icy surfaces dis
close that automatic transmissions
provide an excellent braking media
without skidding if properly han
dled by the driver. Tests of 47 ve
hicles over a three-year period
proved that the automatic trans
mission was a better means of stor
ing on slippery surfaces than the
brakes of the vehicle.
"As car speeds increase our pres
ent braking system becomes more
and more obsolete and this is fur
ther aggravated by wet or icy sur
faces.
