At this time of the year you
will begin to take notice whether
or not you have a good crop of
grapes on your muscadine vines.
If not, why not? Although not al
ways the case, the usual answer to
that question is poor pollination.
Most muscadine varieties require
pollination by a male vine in order
to set fruit. Many of the wild mus
cadine vines are males and in the
past have served as pollinators for
the vines planted in the home gar
dens. However, many wooded and
brushland areas have been put in
to cultivation and in doing so the
male muscaline have been destroy
ed and now the garden varieties
are not producing good crops.
I saw a good illustration of this
last week. A large James grape
which formerly produced good
crops has only a scattering of
grapes on it. That has been the
story for several years. However,
three young vines propagated from
this one and planted in another
garden along with some perfect
flowered pollinators have a heavy
crop of grapes on them this year.
This goes to show how important
pollination is for your scupper
nongs and muscadines.
During the past few years sever
al perfect flowered varieties of.
muscadines have been offered for
sale. They were developed at the

varieties will produce crops with
out the presence of male vines and
also will take the place of male
vines in pollinating other varieties.
Since the male vines produce no
grapes, it is a distinct advantage
to use one of these perfect flow
ered varieties for pollination. Why
use the old varieties at all? Be
cause they are of better quality.
The best of the perfect flowered
varieties are Burgaw, Wallace and

Dog lovers .will tell you that no
home is complete without one of
"Man's best friends.” Whether you
fall into this group or not, chances j
are good that for one reason or an
other you do have a-dog.
If you give your dog reasonable ]
good care, you will be rewarded
by having a healthy animal. In the
long run the proper care will be j
much less trouble and expense.
A puppy requires more attention
than a grown dog. He should have
a clean bed, raised off the floor
and placed where it will be free
from drafts or excessive heat.
He should have access, at all times,
to clean water. Place his bed away
from household traffic so he can j
catch up on his sleep and grow, j
Be sure his bed is large enough, j
Pill his bed with a good type
of litter. There are several kinds
in general use—shredded newspa
per, some types of straw and cedar
shavings. Cedar shavings are con
sidered best.
If he sleeps in the house, you
will'want to keep his litter in a
clean bag so that it won’t get
caught in his coat and be dragged
all over the house. Be very sure
that all his bedding is clean.
Have your dog checked for
worms about once every two
months. This will prevent any
worms from getting a hold in his
system. Also, by checking his stool
