Gillis Has Little Chance of Breaking Daughtry's Record David Gillis’ chances of setting* the Panthers’ all-time rushing rec ord appeared dim this week as an official check of the records dis closed he would need to gain 275 years in tonight’s contest with La Grange to top the 1,300 yards gain ed in 1953 by record-holder Glenn Daughtry. Gillis has gained 1,025 yards in 98 rushes this season, giving him an average of better than 10 .yards per carry. Until an official check of the records were made this week it was believed the Mount Olive halfback was, on the threshold of setting a' new rushing record for the local eleven. Gillis, however, is in a position to break Daughtry’s scaring record. The former Panther fullback, npw a guard on the University of North Carolina eleven, scored 74 points in his senior year, two more-than Gillis has at present. ■ <V; One touchdown tonight by Qie Panther halfback will give him the record in the scoring department. Gillis’ 'average of a first down each time he has carried the hall Is a shade better than Daughtry's. The former Pantlyer averaged about eight yards per carry. ■{•' Except for picking up yardage and scoring, the resemblences btr tween the two players end. Daugh try, who was called for nearly twaw thirds of his team’s carries, bulled his way for yardage, while Gillis has depended upon speed and shifty running. o*. ‘ -—.
