CALDWELL AT THE AGE OF S3 To Dr. W. B. Caldwell of MoQti- cello, HI., a practicing physician for 47 years, It seemed cruet that so many con stipated men, women and children, and particularly old folks, had to be kept constantly "stirred np” and half sick by taking cathartic pills, tablets, salts, calomel and nasty oU^ While he knew that constipation was the canse of nearly all headaches, bil iousness, indigestion and stomach mis ery, he did dot believe that a sickening "purge" or “physic" every day or two was necessary. In Dr. Caldw^’s Syrup Pepsin he discovered s Uuntlve which regulates the bowels. A single dose will estab lish aatural, hsalthy bqwel movement Isr weeks at a Urns even for those losUy coofttpetsd. Record-breaking cotton crop and biggest population In state prison his tory marked the annual report of the state prison board in a sitting filled with routine but dashed with interest nevertheless. 7716 state is feeding 1,415 prisoners as of January 1, 1926. Of these there are 202 ablel bodged men who are available for any hard worl^ The cotton crop is 2,500 bales. The cash deficit is approximately $240,000 for the year. But the cotton has not been marketed and when it is sold it would seem that 2,500 bales will eas ily wipe out the debt for the year. James A. Leak, of Wadesboro, chair man of the board of directors of the ‘ stag’s prison, issued the following statement: “The board of directors of the^ state’s prison held its regular month ly meeting at the prison at Raleigh. “_Besides routine matters the board received a report on the population of the prison for the calendar year 1925. It showed an increase of 189 convicts for the year, the^ prison hav ing a total population on January 1, 1926, of 1,415 prisoners. (During the year 59 convicts made escape from the various points of confinement. Of these 46 were recaptured, leaving only 13 at large. There were eight deaths from natural causes, which the board considers a fine record. Three pris oners were killed attempting to es cape. In each instance the board made a^personal Investigation and a coroner’s jury exonerated the guards. “The farm committees reported a yield of more than 2,500 bales of cot ton, which is a record production for the prison, so far as available rec ords disclose. “The board took up for final con sideration their placing of the prison cotton from the 1925 crop and the 1926 crop in the Cotton Growers asso ciation. The decision of the board was that they would not join the as sociation. T “The board advised of an aveage monthly cash deficiency for the year of approximately $20,000. However^ the cotton has not yet been marketed. “The board further advises the pub lic In general that there are now 202 able bodied convicts available for construction of highways or other public construction work, for which the superintendent and board are un able to obtain work.
