LOCAL BANKS
We wfeh to call atte>tion of our
readers to the statements of the
two Raeford banks published in this
issue as taken from Sworn state
ments to the Corporation Commis
sion. Those who know how to dl
gest these statements will find a lot"
of cause for congratulation at the
healthy condition shown.
A few weeks ago a htan from
someother town wa^ in Raeford and
in a talk with him he made the boast
that a bank in his town had no
money borrowed, correctly taking
the position that this was a fine
sign. iWe were glad to be able to
tell him that neither Raeford banks
had any money borrowed nor had
they had for at least a year, going
through the summer months, even,
without discounting a .piece of paper
or borrowing a cent. And that is
something to be proud of.
Another factor in studying the
condition of a bank is a close scru
tiny of the type of assets that it
has; that is, whether they are of a
liquid nature or not, subject to con
version into ’cash on short notice.
In this respect you will find these
two statements most gratifying and
worthy of your tetudy.
It is our prediction that the Rae
ford banks will draw deposits and
business from an ever-increasing ra
dius. With the banditry that is be
coming so commonplace, the man
with money will seek a safe deposi
tory for it and he will not mind
going many miles to find it. The
way our bankS' have conducted them
selves entitles them to the conli
dence of everyone who knows any
thing about the business of bank
ing and this confidence will find ex
pression at the depositor’s windows.
ted Daughters of the Confederacy
held the first meeting of the year
{Wednesday January 7th at the home
of Mrs. J. W. McLauchlln with Meb
dames McLauchlin and Wm. McFad
yen hostesses.
Mrs. Herbert McLean, president,
was in the chair and Mrs. Clyde
Upchurch acted as secretary in the
absence of Mrs. _ Cyrus Thompson.
Much business of imiportance wasi
transacted before the program for
the afternoon was taken up. As is
customary the January program al
ways centers around the lives of
Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jack-
son, the two idols of the Daugh
ters, both of whose birthdays come
in this month. The devotional by
Mrs. Carswell, chaplain, well as
a timely article read by her were
very appropriate for the New ■ Year.
The program was as follows:
Tribute to Maury—Mrs. H. L.
Gatlin.
Biographical Sketch of Stonewall
Jackson—Mrs. John McAoogan.
Jackson’s War Horse-'-Mrs. Clyde
Upchurch. - ~
Interesting Pacts Concerning the
Home Life of Robert E. Lee—^^rs.
J. W. Currie.
Duets—“In the Gloaming” and
“Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny.”
—Mesdames Jim Poole and Arch
Currie.
*
After the program the hostesses
served fruit cake, cookies, coffee
and salted pecans. The chapter
president asked all members to be
present at 2.30 p. m., Wednesday af
ternoon, January 21at, at the grad
ed 'school when a special program
in memory of Lee and Jackson will
be pUt on. Hostesses for the next
U. D. C. meeting are Mesdames
