C WABK EVKRGBEEN GBOUP MBBTS. l%e Evergreen group pf the garden club' met February 11th in the home of Mrs. .Lems Upchurch with Mrs. Hallie Gatlin assistant hhateng. Mrs. J. W. W^llker presided over the business and plans were made for securing nandinas for the triangle at the cemetery. This will complete the dub project for the year. The progrmn for the afternoon was on How to Transplant Native Shrubs and Tyrees, and was led by Mrs. J. W. Dowd. Mrs. Dowd gave a paper on this subject, and also presented pictures on slides by way of illi^- tration. Mrs. A. L. O’Briant read a paper tm the Use of Pine on High ways, Drives and Gardens. A paper, “How Can the Garden Club Lead in Planting Trees in the Community,” w^ given by Mrs. H. McK. McDiar- mid. A poem, 'Winter Shadows, was read by Mrs. A. K. Currie. The program was well given and very helpful. The hostesses served a dainty sal- ad plate carrying out colors sugges tive of Valentine Day. \ GARDEN LOVERS MEET. The Garden Loyers held tiieir Feb ruary meeting at the home of Mrs. K. A. MacDonald, who was assisted in entertaining by Mrs. A. D.- Gore. Af ter a business meeting the program • as outlined ip the ■ year book was given with Mrs. Dezeme, Mrs. Car ter and Mrs. Blue taking parts. During the social hour delicious refreshments suggestive of the Val entine season were served by the hostesses. BARRINGTON - JONES. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wilbur Bar rington announce the engagement of their daughter, Myrtice EUzabeth, to Daniel Silas Jones, of Salisbury, the wedding to take place in March. Mrs. I. H. Shankle, Mr. and Mrs. |31i Shankle and son, Jimmie, attend ed the funeral of Mrs. Clarence Grif fin, in Albemarle,. Monday. Little Patricia Ann Cottingham, of ^Rockingham, is visiting her grand parents, Mi*, and Mrs. T. T. Cotting ham. U. D. G. MEETS. _ The Raefdrd Chapter U. D. C. met Wednesday, February 5th, in the home of Mrs. N. B. Blue at 3:30 with Mrs. Kate Blue Covington assistant hostess. The meeting was" opened with the devotional'led by Mrs. W. C. Brown. Mrs. Kate Blue Covington, presided over the business session held. Plans were made for the district meeting to be held here on March 26th. Mrs. M. L. McKeithan had charge' of the program, which was on Sidney Lapier, reading a most interesting sketch on his bbyhood days. The hostesses, assisted by'Misses Patsy and Bonnie Kate Blue, served sandwiches and tea, followed by salt ed niits. . E. A. offices of Hoke, Scotland and Robeson, located in- Raeford, is attending an R. E. A. school at the Robert E. '■ A .solid pullmmi train' carrying a medical battalion from New York to Bragg passed through Raeford yes terday. It was a splendid looking bunch of men, far remov^ from the dirty, tired looking soldiers packed into day coaches that many remember in years gone by. G^rge Dickson, young son of Mr. and Mrs^ George Graham Dickson, has been very ill with pneumonia, .and has two nurses. He is much bet ter now,'however. Lieutenant Dick son came up from Moultrie to t^e his family ba^ with him but re mained in Raeford after the baby became sick. Capt. and Mrs. Conk, and daughter Lynn, of West Palm Beach, Florida, have taken the apartment at Mrs. Paul Dickson’s that Capt. and Mrs. King have had. They are rooming at Mrs. Julian Johnson’s until Mrs. King joins her husband at Fort Blanding, Fla. Capt. Conk is one of the artil lery instructors at the army replace ment center. Fort Bra^. i Major Podle was home for the weekend from Ft. Moultrie. Lt. and Mrs. William Pagh and dau ghter, Beth, of Southern Pines, spent Sunday with Lt. and Mrs. Ben Huii^ phrey who have an apartment at Robert Gatlin’s. Chaplain and Mrs. Willard Brown have taken an apaltoent at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Rhamy. Lieut, and Mrs. Younger Snead, of Fort Moultrie and children, are at home. Lt. Snead has been ordered to Fort Monroe to school 'While he is there Mrs. Snead will divide her" time between her old home at Weldon • with her mother, Mrs. 'Vin son, and Raeford.
