1. 11 ■ IJv \ ^ POOLE'S HEDIEY By D, ScM Poole The report that I sprained my ankle in a race with the A. and R. ‘^Mail Train,” is an exaggeration. I have never heen beaten nor crippled in a race with a train. Reports show that approximately 2,000 ships have been sent to the bottom of the sea since this war began. They say figh1;ing is bad on old clothes, it must be destruc tive to ships also. all war equipment; to cease to build submarines, airships—all war ^re parations were to cease. All the other nation disbanded their armies, junked their war equipment. Ships rotted dowm at their moorings. Every nation ceased to think war, except Germany, which made unheard of war equip ment—the most formidable fighting force the world ever saw. The other nations thought Germany was truth ful nation, and took them at their word. After each air raid, firemen are called out to save all property possible, and the deep pits made in the earth, 39 or 40 feet deep in streets must be filled before traffic is resumed. Hitler’s excuse for war preparations at the start was to regain the lost province—territory given Poland, France and other countries but he did not stop with that—^he took whole countries. France and Belgium sur rendered with little fighting. So did Holland. And all of these countries are now Germany—and little else. When Germans made her demands upon her neighbors, she had a fight ing force the other nations of- the earth could not meet. Italy and Japan are copartners with Germany in this deception, and they have meant to take control of the world for gain. “Thou shalt not kill.” “who shed- deth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed.” Vengence is Mine, saith the Lord; I will repay.” When the law overtakes a criminal, it is the law that punishes. The criminal has forefeited all his rights of free dom. Few of us are able to do great things. I have thought out what I would do if I were rich, but we are not rich, it is our duty to do quite a good many little things. We are permitted to do more of these than we do. It doubtless took China by surprise when armed Japanese troops a- sumed the right to direct this great {jeace-loving lation affairs. China re sented this. Chinese love liberty as do Japanese. Italy took Ethiopia, and aided Germany in the conquering of peoples who had no desire to war but who desired only to be let alone. Electricity, a powerful and rela tively new tMl on the farm, is speed- ihg the efficiency of North C«olina farmers in the curr«it drive to strengthen national defense, says D. E. Jone, rural electrification specialist if N. C. State College. Some farmer have been using this servant in their work for the past five or six years, but with greater emphasis on increased production and efficiency, they are now broad ening their use of this power. In addition, others who have used it in only a small way for house hold purposes are applying it to farm jobs and finding it the easiest, quickest, and cheapest way of doing their larger chores, the State Col lege specialist pointed Hi dairying, it milks^tte co^, cools the milk, pumps ' grinds the feed, ' heats and sterilizes the uteni poultry farm, it broods heats the drinking fou the laying house, grinds pumps the water, and in a hatches the chicks. Orderly: “You call that soup.” Mess Sarge: “No, This is dish water.” The destruction of buildings, the vast tax of labor in placing the countries involved, and “dug full of holes,” making it tenable, and the loss of man power will hold the world at a standstill for many years to come. Ryebread, no matter what else vou may have, is a poor living. Persons may get along very well on corn. Mess Sarge handed him a ladle. “All right.” TODAY, thousands of U.S. citizens from feve^ state in this tJnidn are floclfiifg to Washingtdn to take an active part m tae Federal Gbverment’s gigaiiti’c 'defense program. Of these people, none are more easily spotted than those from the nation s bluest, most fabulous state—the Lone Star State of Texas. What Texans are contributing to the national defense program, both in Wa^in^on and in Texas itself, is pictured in the latest March ^ “Thumbs Up, Texas!”, from which this scene is taken. The film, which presents an absorbing story of Texas’ vast natural resources and colorful background, also shows how young American solmers and sailors from all sections of the country are being trained in Texas camps and shore stations today. of flue-cured tobacco. So the com mittee suggested that when less than 50 pounds of the material (six per cent potash in an 800 pounds to the acre application) is spread at plant ing time, an additional 50 to 120 pounds be aplied as side-dressing within 20 days after tranplanting. The same procedure should be fol lowed where a potash deficiency is present. Vitamins Important In Animal Breeding CALVES Six baby beef calves have been placed with 4-H Club members of Franklin County to prepare for showing at the Rocky Mount Fat Stock Show next spring, says Assist ant Farm Agent E. P. Barnes. "/ Never Dreamed an Oil Range Could be so Attractive!” Beauty is only one of the attractions of the modem Perfection Oil Ranges. A small down payment will place one in your kitchen for a lifetime of dependable ECONOMICAL service. The success with which North Caro lina farmers raise their pig, lamb, and calf crops to meet expanding national food needs may depend in a large part on the kind of rations they supply their breeding stock, says Earl H. Hostetler,, professor of animal husbandry at N. C. State College. Ration well fortified with vitamins and minerals are required for nor mal reproduction, and Vitamin A, E, and C have received most attention in relation to reproduction. Carotene, which is present in well- cured green hay, fresh green pas ture, grass well-made morn, grass and legume silage, and yellow varie ties of carrots, squash, and sweet potatoe, is the principal source of Vitamin A, highly essential in the reproduction of all farm animals. However, Hostetler pointed out, carotene is rapidly destroyed in feeds, especially under conditions of poor storage, so precautions must be taken to provide adequate amounts particularly to pregnant animals. As early as in 1922, the Vitamin E factor was demonstrated to be necessary for reproduction of labor atory animals such as the rat, but the need for it in the diet of farm animals other than poultry is still questionable. Most good rations con tain adequate amounts of this vitamin, and only in unusual cases is it likely that animals may be sterile because E is lacking. Such feeds as wheat bran, shorts, linseed meal, hominy feed, white and yellow corn, cottonseed meal, and kafir are good sources of Vitamin E, as are most of the common hay and pasture crops. State College agronomist, is chairman. Each year a committee of out standing agronomists of North and South Carolna, Florida, Georgia, and Virginia meets to study tobacco fer tilization and to pass along suggested improvements to the leaf growers of their states. . ^ For the heavier or more productive soils, the committee recommend a mixture of three percent total ni trogen, 10 percent available phos phoric acid, and six to 12 percent potash, to be applied at the rate of 800 to 1,000 pounds to the acre. Recommendations for lighter or less productive soils is the same, except that the phosphoric acid content is eight to 10 percent. Where the tobacco has a tendency to be rough or of poor quality, the agronomists suggested that the ni trogen be reduced to two percent. For such conditions, two percent total nitrogen, 10 to 12 percent avaittiale phosphoric acid and six to 12 per cent potash is suggested. Rate of application remain at 800 to 1,000 ‘pMnds to the acre.
