Kiricpatrick, of Fort Bragg, recovery officer for Hoke and Scotland counties has requested that all school children aid in re covering articles lost by the sol diers on maneuvers last fall. Lt. Kirkpatrick requests that every one who has found an article lost by the soldiers, or who knows of an ar ticle found, turn these articles in to the principal of their school who in turn will bring it to the office of the superintendent, where Lt. Kirk patrick will pick it up. These ar ticles are such things as flashlights, steel helmets, articles of clothing, rifles, picks, shovels, axes, etc. The return of found articles will aid in national defense. THE ARMY-BUSINESS DIRECTORY. For the benefit of the citizens of Raeford and for the Army people we are publishing a directory this week which should be of service and bene fit to every one concerned. In recent weeks there have been many changes in the Army folk re siding in Raeford, and this directory is being published to acquaint them wifii the progressive merchants and business houses, and at the same time to provide us all with the in formation we need to know of new comers to our commimity. For the past year the News-Jour nal has been sent to all Army famil ies here through the cooperation of these merchants and the publisher. Many of the Army people have ap preciated this expression of good will and enjoyed the news of our people and our county. To the newcomers, may we explain that the paper comes to you through the kindness of these business houses, and is a weekly ex- iwesnon of ^eir pleasure in having you with us. We trust that you will study the advertisements of these firing,>both this week and each week following, so that you will know where fresh, new and desirable mer chandise can be most reasonably ob tained. Hoke Girls Win—^Boys Lose On Friday night January 16, both high school basketball teams con tested for supremacy with Massey Hill teams. The final scores were: iris, Raeford 19, Massey Hill 13. Boys, Massey Hill 30, Raeford 8. New Courses Beginning at the second term a course in Safety Education will be offered. J. W- Turlington will be the instructor. A course in art is also offered by E. C. Crawford, pas tor of the Raeford Methodist church, to any students interested. . The Red Cross First Aid course for those who will teach such courses was started at Hoke High Tuesday afternoon. Thirteen teachers en rolled for this course. The course is to be taught by Dr. P. P. McCain. Dr. R. L. Murray taught the first lesson for Dr. McCain. Bus mechanic, Lee Rivenbark, at tended a meeting of bus mechanics in Raleigh yesterday.. This meeting was called by C. C. Brown, equipment engineer of the State l^hool Com mission, to discuss means for ihaet- ing the shortage of repair parts. You will probably be interested to know that to date over 23,000 school books have bera furnished the chil dren of Hoke county. Over 15,000 of these have been absolutely free and over 8,000 have been high school books that are on rental list Each child in high school pays a flat fee of $2.40- for books. Should that child have to buy the books, it would cost him, on the average, over $6.00. To date, Hoke High has rented $817.20 worth, at the $2.00 rate. Up church high has rented $583.20 at the sanie rate. Making a total of $1,- 400.40. This will go over $1,500.00 by the end of the year.
