Name— Address. SAMPLE COPY ON REQUEST Vi POOLE’S MEDLEY 1 By D. SCOTT POOLE It is no grounds to boast of a 12- year-school course, but to do that same work now being accomplished in six years would be whereof to boast. There is too much time given to sports, w'hich may be helpful in de veloping students physically, but schools were intended primarily to develop folks mentally. If you read O’Henry, he had a low opinion of the mental accomplish ments of college bred men. He re ferred to colleges as baseball, or foot ball colleges. It is said all college men bet on their teams—a man is not loyal to his alma mater unless he i)ets on the varsity. team. Nothing justifies gambling. It is charged by Governor Brough ton that protection to shipping on the Atlantic coast is inadequate, and fr^- riuently inept. Governor Broughton made a trip to coast towns, saw tor pedoed ships, and heard evidence of boldness of the German raiders. There is danger of their shelling the coast cities. Subs play around like dol phins. The Governor requests the Army and Navy department to “coordinate their counter measures.” He said that recently after an American vessel had been sunk, that three submar ines came to the surface off the coast in plain view of Fort Macon and their crews chatted with each other. Aftdr another sinking off the coast near Southport, three submarines “played around like dolphins.” This country needs Schleys, Dew eys and Sampsons. We have a navy we hear but little from it the past few weeks, however, we have been requested “to have faith and wait.” The want of production in war sup plies, particularly aircraft, has pre vented our Navy from engaging in patroling our east coasts, and with out aircraft, it would mean suicide to meet the enemy on unequal terms. These airships are so fast the anti aircraft guns are unreliable, that is, antiEurcraft guns hit about one in a thousand, ^ink of shooting an ob ject flying three himdred miles an hour. American airmen are playing with Jap ships, often, it looks like. American ships are the fastest in the world, and when we get plenty of them built, we will rejoice in their accomplishment Not that they care any more for laborers than we do, but that they may continue to rake in dues, labor leaders are responsible for most of our lack of aircraft at this time. I have not any faith in any labor union, nor fraternal orders. All any of them want is your money. A patriot will serve his country for nothing, if his services are needed. And in America today it would be a good business were every patriot re quired to serve for his victuals and clothes at a time like this—^when all human rights, religious and politi cal, are at stake. Remember Hitler’s idea of an ideal government, is one in which the favored few have all they de sire—and any dissenting voice stilled at once—the poor and helpless forc ed to labor hopelessly for the priv ilege of being alive—^nothing more. As an example of what you may ex pect if Hitlerism wins, look at Greec^ Fraiice', ifemay, “Bel^uin, TP6mnf-2 all those conquered countries in Eur ope. FOR CLERK OF THE COURT I hereby announce that in the com ing primary I will be a candidate for the position of Clerk of Coiurt of Hoke county subject to the action of the Democratic primary to be held Jay 30. 1942. * JOHN CAMERON. » Were Germany and Japan to con quer England and the United States, which we all know is impossible, but suppose they were to, then these lead^s would destroy each other within a short time. W. B. McQUEEN Candidate for Judge of Recorder’s Court of Hoke county. Your support and influrace will be appreciated. As it is now, I can lie upon my bed and sleep in perfect safety, but were an Axis government to displace the democratic form of government under which we are all assured of life, liberty and the pursuit of hap piness, eiU arms, all public meetings and organizations would be suppress ed and daily a number would be pub licly shot to continuously awe us into submission to “OUR GOVERN'- MENT.” Americans have rlever a$ yet leartt- ed to appreciate the safety, the great privileges of a sure-enough free peo ple. No goverpment on earth any thing like approaches our govern ment. It is still the great experi ment in human liberty. '“As for oth ers they may do as they choose, but as for me, give me librety or. give me death.” There is no honor in being elected to office—any office, unless you do more for your constituency than any one else had formerly done. I have always argued that there was no hon or in being elected to office, but there is honor in serving better than any one else could possibly. I do not believe college educated men aJpe as well trained as they were long ago. What I go by . is the fact that they are not the source of infor mation educated men used to be. When I stalled, I could go to educat ed men for the desired information I needed. There are very few now adays who have information to pass out. We used to be thrUled to read of the young man who acquired an ed uction by “a lightwoodknot Are.” The heights by great men reached and kept, were not attained by sudden flight, but while their neighbors sweetly slept, they were toiling up ward in the night.” Now, hit home runs, throw and receive passes and touch gMl; or they are not educated. “Does your husband give you all tile money you want?” “Good lackaday, no. There ain’t that much.” BROODERS Many Greene county farmers with nnall flocks of chicks are building the inexpensive lamp brooder, re ports J. W. Grant, assistant farm ag ent of the N. C.
