'-.•A*' f ' :-mU'-'; .r:~' NKWS-JQIJBWAL, BAEFO^^jj^^ ■Si#' 4 By D. SCOTT POOLE The Fayetteville Observer came to our place as long ago as I can re member. It was a weekly newspaper. It first became a daily, four pages, only a few years ago. J Ife Carthage Blade was started in sunsner of 1878 or ’79, published by H. A. Foote. This was the first paper I subscribed for. The North Carolina Presbyterian was publish^ Fayetteville, beginning in the 70’s it was a good paper. The publishers oved to Wtoington during the 80’s. t died there. , John A. Oats published the North arolina Baptist in Fayetteville in ihe90’s, and around the turn of the century he sold out to the Biblical llecorder. Oats’ was a church paper, but in Church paper form. It was a four-page, six-column paper. He made some money, it was believed, when he sold it. uchiTig a gmall-town newspaper, can not get a big circulation, becauM there are not people who want it. A paper with 1,000 subscribers ^ break even provided it has tro heavy overhead expenses. I have gotten out a weekly papm- maw a week, month and year with no help at all. I had no knowledge of printing at all when I went into the business. I asked a printer-publ^w what I should charge for advertismg (I knew the subscription price oi county weekly papers, but nothing about the right charges for job work, (letterheads, billheads, envelopes, etc. Restrictimsoii Few hems to Be Salt Overseas tioned There is but little money in pub- IF YOUR NOSE ^CLOSK UP^ TONIGHT I went to my office one Wendes- day morning, and my printer told me he had the offer of a better job at some other work, and he was leav ing that morning. I wired Fayetteville and Maxton for a printer and that evening one came from each place. Menntim? a boy in town who had set a little type and myself went to setting type. On Thursday morning one printer began correcting the matter the boy and I had set, and I saw before he had worked long, it would have saved time, and we would have ten the paper out sooner and better if the matter we had set had been dumped. However, I learned to set type in selfHlefense. Printers, de pendable, sober men, were scarce. Soldiers overseas may have writ^ home for matches, cadi money, cig arette lighter fluid or intoxicants, but don’t send overseas troops any of these items. Headquarters Fourt Service Command has warned. Mailing restrictions were listed to insure delivery of Christmas presents sent the foreign-duty soldiers by De cember 25 and the Army Postal Serv ice reissued a plea for all Christmas parcels of overseas destination to be mailed between October 1 and No vember 1. Requests made by the soldiers for matches and cigarette lighter flmd because of the difficulty of obtaining matches in many parts of the world will have to go unfUled because of the danger of spontaneous combustion in mail sacks is too great. However cigarette ligthers may be inailed but be sure to leave out the fluid. Cash money is useless as a gift to troops overseas because in many places where U. S. soldiers are st^ is a local prohibition against importation of United States money, so rnuclf money could not be spent. When sending money to sol diers in other countries use Domestic Postal Money Orders which may be cashed at Army Post Offices any where. Money orders overseas are paid in local foreign currency at the current rate of exchange. Postage for these Christinas pack, ages must be fully prepaid at the regular parcel post rate, only to the pbrt of embarkation. Each should be limited to the size of an ordinary shoe box and weigh no more than six pounds; should be securely wrapped to withstand rigorous handling; and should be wrapped so as to permit ready inspection of the contents by the censors. Not more than one Christ mas parcel may be mailed in any one week to the same address^. Gifts of a personal, utilitarian na ture should be sent overseas troops, according to the Army Postal Service. Witness my hand and John McRae and Gus Williford named the post office established at their store just this side of the bridge er Rockfish out the Fayetteville road two miles back in the latter 80’s. J. W. McLauchlin bought out McRae & Williford, after he had op erated a turpentine business in Sout.a Carolina for some years, and had sold that, and returned to his native land. Dr. and Mrs. A. P. Didcsoti had more children than they could send to boarding school, particularly those in the primary grades, so after con sulting Mr. McLauchlin, a believer in education, they reslpved' to establish a college preparatory school here on the McRae land. Raeford Institute resulted, and it opened its doors in 1895. The farmers living in this sec tion "of the counties of Robeson and Cumberland bought lots and buiit homes here—had to furnish homes, one here and the other on the fariri end they were at home all right at either place.
