J m i THURSDAY, FEB. 11th 1943 THE NEWS-JOURNAL, R AFFORD. N. C. PACE THREE POOLE'S MEDLEY Br D. SCOTT POOLE Raeford had its origin in a turpen tie commissary. John McRae and Gus Williford, partners in that tur pentine business, took the last syl. lale of their names and made Raeford. W. B. McQueen, now judge of Hoke's Recorler's court was mail car rier for several years over this sec tion of country, supplying several country postoffices Fontcol over Drowning Creek being a western terminal. I was carrieer for Gas McKenzie for two weeks in 1881. He was con tractor for carrying the mails from Clark's Mills to Keyser, from Clark's Mill to Cartilage, and from Clark's Mill to Powellsville 20 miles outh, 20 imiles East, an 20 miles West 4 days a week. To drive 20 miles a day, six days a week would keep a driver busy, and kill a horse a year. To go the same route every day, tires both horse and driver. The monotomy grows irksome. State College Hints for Farm Homemakers By RUTH CURRENT N. C. State College All these years you have been eat'ng turnips and turnip greens, but did you know just how many vitamins thy contained? Turnip Greens supply vitamin A, several of the B-vitamins and vitamin C. When it canes to turnips, ruta bagas rate slightly higher in food value than white turn ps. They contain no vitamin A but do give you a generous fupply of vitamin B-l and vitamin C, riboflavin and niacin. Rutabagas also are slightly richer in carbohydrates and miner als than the white turnips. State College Answers Timely Farm Questions Q. How many hogs diould the av erage farmer grow? A. To reach North Carolina's goal in pork production the farmer should keep one or more brood sows and breed them twice a year. Feed at least twice as many hogs as are needed for hame consumption and sell the surplus. Feeder pigs may now be bought and raised at a prof it. Hog feed has advanced 18 per cent since January, 1942. while the price of pork has advanced 25 per cent. Q. How can I prepare a .aap spray for garden insects A. Dr. B. B. Fulton, research en tomologist, N. C. State College, ad vises that you dissolve one pound of soap in a gallon of boiling water. If bar soap is used it should be cut up so as to dissolve quickly. Add five gallons of cold water to make six gallons of spray and apply when the plants are wet with dew or on a cloudy day. Worms, plant lice and terrapin bugs will be killed. There are many ways of saving soap which will help in the war ef fort. Keep soap dry .after each use and use only as much as is needed to overcome the hardness of the water. Ue a soap shaker for soap scraps and pour boiling water over them in a bowl. The resulting jelly kept near the sink can be used in washing dishes and clothes. For the bath, small bits of soap in a thin bag are just as good as a large cake of soap. A thin cake can be pressed onto a larger cake when both aie wet and the small cake w ll become a part of the larger one. Axis war prisoners may be used in this coun try next summer to help produce the food that Allied fighting men will need to cru ih the enemy. J. A. Walker, chief of the labor branch of the Food Production Ad ministration, disclosed tolay that the government was considering using prisoners captured in Africa and Europe to help fill agricultural labor shortages. Such pricsoners would have to be used, he said, where they could work in large groups so that they could be guarded efficiently. Their use would be limited largely to cultiva ting and harvesting commercial veg etble, canning and fruit crop;. Walker has been assigned to re cruiting workers for the record pro duction goals of the Agriculture De. partment's wan- food production. Walked told newsmen that some farmers have expressel reluctance to plant more because of a fear that they would be unable to culti vate and harvest additional crops. To uneet the need for full-time workers, the government pliins, he said, to recruit 50,000 low.income and under-productive families in the marginal areas of the Appalach ian and Ozark mountains and the cut-over timber areas of Minnesota and Wisconsin for placement on highly productive dairy, livestock and poultry farms of the middle west and elsewhere. The seasonal labor shortage, by far the worst, will be attacked by several methods. Besides the pos sible use of war prisoners, the gov ernment hopes to recruit at least 275,000 migratory farm workers from Mexico and other Latin-American countries. The government also nfjins to enlist possibl 3,000,000 town and city residents for short time seasonal harvesting operations.
