On account of low enrollment Rockfish lost a teacher this year as did Anti och and Raeford Graded for the same reason. Hoke High holds its same number by a very slim margin, while Mildouson and Ashemont hold theirs by a comfortable number. Mildouson held its closing exerci ses Monday afternoon. A very en joyable program was put on by the pupils. The first part a medley of songs, recitations, etc., given by the primary and grammar grades; the second, class day exercises present ed by the seventh grade. After the seventh grade had completed their part of the program the chairman of the county Board of Commission ers, the chairman of the school board and the County Superintendent were called on for short talks. SCHOOL NEWS by K. A. McDonald Closing Exercises of County Schools Elsewhere in the News-Journal you will find the program of a piano recital given at the Ashemont School last Friday evening. The pupils were presented by Mrs. Cook, piano teacher in the school and was thor oughly enjoyed by all who attended. The Rockflsh Committee met in Raeford Saturday night and elected Mrs. Z. G. All committees have now held their elections and all facul ties are complete. It is hoped that there will not be any additional resig nations to upset the work of the va rious committees. C A picnic supper was spread on the Rockflsh School grounds late Tues day afternoon bv the patrons of the school. It was in the usual bounti ful Rockfish style and was thorough ly enjoyed by all who attended. Wednesday was a skip day for the white schools of the county. The pu pils and teachers returning on Thurs day for the final activities of the 1942-43 session. The reason for skipping Wednesday was to allow teachers time to get all pupil grades and report cards ready. These were given out then on Thursday. County Seventh Grade Promotion Day Tuesday at 10:30 A. M. the 94 sev enth graders gathered in the audito rium of Hoke High School for the annual Seventh Grade Promotion Day exercises. Certificates of Promo tion were awarded by the chairman of the various school committees or the principals of the different schools Rev. R. E. High School News Baccalaureate Sermon. On Simday, May 9, Mr. E. C. Craw ford Methodist Church preached the Baccalaureate sermon to the gradu ating class of Hoke High School. The subject of Mr. Crawford's address was "Being a Good Soldier." Mr. Crawford cited in a very forceful manner some of the qualities neces sary to a good soldier and urged the seniors to go forth fortified with these attributes int a difficult world. The Library Board wishes to thank Mr. J. A. Baucom for several books which he presented to the Li brary, O Seniors Given Welner Roast. Mr. and Mrs. Marion Gatlin gave a weiner roast last Wednesday even ing in honor of the Senior Class. The attractive young daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. Gatlin, Lilmar Sue Is one of the class Mascots. Dickie Riven bark is the other Mascot. Weiners and all the accessories were cooked and served at Clyde's Pond. Those enjoying this delightful occasion were: the seniors, Mr. and Mrs. V. R. White, Miss Gill, Mrs. Rivenbark and Dickie. Registration Students attended school Thursday morning to receive their report cards and to complete registration for next year. To Attend Summer School. Mr. and Mrs. V. R. White and Miss Jessie Helen Belch will attend the summer session at Wake Forest Col lege. Wake Forest, N. C. Library News Frances Parkinson Keyes, of Washington, D. C. nationally known writer of fiction and who has con tributed articles to Good Housekeep ing for several years, was a visitor to Fayetteville and Fort Bragg re cently. Mrs. Keyes had several tele phone conversations with Mrs. Wm. Lamont, of Raeford, at whose home friends of Mrs. Keyes, Lt. and Mrs. Kerr, of Boston, Mass., lived while Lt Kerr was stationed at Fort Bragg two years ago. She had heard little of Fayetteville, but had much about Raeford. A number of Mrs. Keyes books are in Hoke Count Library and are very popular with! the readers. New books hi the library are: Mrs. Parkingtm, Bromfield; The Bride Saw Red, Carson; The Boy from Maine, Brush; Queen Anne's Lace, Keyes; I Saw the Fall of the Philip pines, Romulo; Let the People Know, Angel!; and Pacific Charter, Abend.
