PAGE FIVE Social Items - Personals WOMEN HAVE OYSTER ROAST CHOWDER FEED The WOMEN, yes the women friends of Mrs. Lewis Unchurch, had a great time Monday night down at the Concrete Works where they en joyed clam chowder and coffee fol lowed by oysters and nil the access ories that go to make an oyster roast a real occasion. Lewis, Tcnimie and Clyde Up church, Archie Howard, Dr. Mathe gon, H. L. Gatlin Jr., John McGoogan, Harry Green and Burl: Chlsholm got the oysters out of the shell and every body had just as many and more than they could eat. It was one of the most enjoyable occasions of the entire season. MESDAMES MATHESON, ROBERTS ARE HOSTESSES AT THREE PARTIES Mrs. Chandler Roberts and Mrs. Arthur Mathcson wee gracious host esses at the home of the latter on three occasions last week. On Wednesday they entertained with a beautifully appointed lunch eon followed by bridge and rook. Seven tables were arranged for the game in living and dininf! rrvms. Tal lies and other appointments were sug gestive of Thanksciving; Mrs W. T. Covington received the prize for hold ing high si'ore. .On Thursday cove-s were laid for twelve when an attractive luncheon was served. Biidfe was played in the afternoon with Mrs. Lawrence Mc Neill holding high score for which she received high prize, a flower bowl of milk glass. edward Mcdowell music club The November meeting of the Ed ward McDowell Music Club was held Tuesuay November 23, 1943, with Misses Hilda Jordan and Janie Lou Veasey as joint hostesses. The president, Bettie Ella Benner presided. The program was in charge ol Mrs. Stuart. The members ct tne club sang "The Star-Spangled Ban ner ' accompanied by Landon Yai bor ough at the piano. Martha Lee Cur rie then gave Thompson's arrange ment of "The Wishing Star." Janie Lou Veasey played Francis Thome's beautiful arrangement of "Simple Aven." Marlene Dellinger played "The Traffic Cop" which was follow ed by an air from the Surprise Sym phony by June Connell. Mrs. Stuart and Belle Smith played a duet "Tulip Time'' by Broadus. Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" was given by Belle Smith. Nita Gullcdge gave An na Pricilla Rislier's 'in Remem brance", Tle program was conclud ed with Nancy Cole playing ' An chors Aweigh". Refreshments were served by the hostesses. That same evening dinner was ser ved at "o'clock at the. seven tallies at which bridge was played in the even ing. Miss Margaret McKenzie of the cjammar sijiool faculty won the high score prize on this occasion. Mrs. Mathcson's house looked most attractive with tasteful arrangements of white and red chrysanthemums. O MRS. A. K. CURRIE AND MRS. JORDAN ENTERTAIN WITH BRIDGE Mrs. A. K. Currie and Mrs. Jessie Jordan, a member of the army per sonel who, makes her home with Mrs. Currie, entertained on Wednesday with a luncheon followed by bridge. Five tables were served at 1 o'clock preceding the bridge game. Mrs. A. L.. O Briant won a prize for making high score and Mrs T-mmie Upchurch was given a prize for second high. CHAPTER OF EASTERN STAR HAS MEETING The Raeford Chapter of the East ern Star had a most interesting and profitable meeting on Monday even ing, when the chapter was visited by Worthy Grand Patron and Mr. and Mrs. George Harlee of the 6th Dis trict of Fayetteville. The Masonic Hall had been decor ated for the occasion with greens and native red berries. After the business and rituals Misses Jcsephine Hall Louise Blue and Mrs. Arthur Mathe son, hostesses served fruit cake and coffee. O Mrs. W. B. Warren has moved into the McFadyons house, vacated by the Busts reccii.ly. McDONALD GREETED ON BIRTHDAY At the home of her son, K. A. Mac Donald, Mrs. E;nma C. MacDonald welcomed many friends who called to wish her happiness on her 87th birthday which was Monday, Nov 22. Mrs. MacDonald remained in her room all day. Beautiful flowers were sent in by friends and many gifts. Her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dixon Cashwell came from Hope Mills, Mrs. Frank Cotton from Fay etteville and Mrs. Edwin 'Buchanan fr.m Laurinburg. O EDUCATIONAL DEPT. HAS INTERESTING MEETING Mrs. J. W. McLauchlin, Mrs. Neill McFayden and Mrs. Lewis Upchurch entertained the Educational Club Tuesday at the home of. Mrs. Pp church. Mrs. Tommie Upchurch, club chair man, presided. She introduced Mrs. J. W. Currie who had charge of the program. Her subject, 'The Presi dent's Cabinet" was handled in an in teresting and instructive manner. Following this, Mrs. H. A. Cameron conducted a quij program. Questions were on the calinet and its functions. Those who answered the questions correctly were given defense stamps. During the business sossi. n, Mrs. W. L. Maness, wife of the new Meth odist preacher, was elected to become a member of the club. After adjournment, the guests were invited into the dining room where a salad course was served. The table had a most attractive center piece of autumrr-leaves and fruit all appoint ments were suggestive of Thanks giving. Mrs. Buchanan of Laurinburg, house guest of Mrs. J. W. McLauchlin was a guest of the club. O BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT Mr. and Mrs. William Mouror an nounce the birth of a daughter, Jo Ann, on the 20th of November. Mrs. Mouror is the former Miss Thel.na McKcilhan. ' O Mr. and Mrs. Dan Mills of Raleigh visited Mr. T. E. Upchurch Sunday. Lt. .Col. W. L. Poole of Ft. The affair will be held at the Armory. O LITERATURE CLUB HEARS DISCUSSION OF "PARIS UNDERGROUND' The Literature Department of the Woman's Club met with Mrs. J. L. Johnson at eight o'clock Tuesday night. Miss Louise Fletcher and Miss Margaret McKenzie were hostesses. Mrs. V. R. White, chairman, called the meeting to order. After a busi ness meeting the members then dis cussed the boxes to be sent to Camp Mackall. Mrs. H. A. Cameron was a visitor and led this discussion. Mrs. Marcus Smith had charge of the pro gram. She reviewed Etta Shiber's book, "Paris Underground," in a most interesting way. After the meeting a shcrt social hour was enjoyed. The hostesses served Russian tea and sandwiches. JO DANCE AT CAMP MACKALL FRIDAY Friday night, Nov. 26, is the date for the next 17th Division dance at Camp Mackall. Major Allen V. Sapo ra, Field Artillery Division special service officer, announces that a spe cial program will be given in the form of an all-soldier show compesed of the loading talent in the division and a chorus of WACs from the Maxton Laurinburg Air Base. In order to have the show start at 8 o'clock it will be necessary to have the buses meet the girls a half-hour earlier than usual. The bus will ar rive at the Soldiers' Center at 6:30 and leave promptly at 6:40. All girls who have been attending the dances at Camp Mackall are asked to meet at the S'ldiers' Center promptly at that time.. CHRISTMAS PARAGES FOR MACKALL. Hoke County has been asked to contribute 150 packages for the sold iers' Christmas at Camn Mackall. These packages will be assembled in Miss Josephine Hall s office, and Dec. 14 is the day. O DANCE AND TURKY DINNER TUESDAY NIGHT The 187th Glider Infantry Regi ment of Camp Mackall gave a Turk ey Dinner and Dance at the Armory Tuesday night for the girls who have USO tickets. O Mrs. H. A. Cameron attended a Red Cross Meeting for Camp and Hospital at Maxton last week. Misses Mary and Rose Speed of Henderson are spending Thanksgiving with the- H. A. Camerons. The Raeford Boy Scouts are spon soring a Square Dance at the Armory Friday night. Miss Evelyn Smith of Virginia Beach is visiting her brother, Dr. Marcus R. Smith this week. Misses Frances Morris of Lillington and Margaret McNeill of Raeford spent the past week end in AshcviUe and Mars Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cost and three children moved from Raeford to Dunn last week. The Bunts made many friends in Raeford during their two years residence here. Mrs. Deane Matheson Barrington who has been doing private duty nursing at Moore county hospital is spending this week with her mother in Raeford. Card of Thanks The family of Mrs. J. E. Jordan wish to express their sincere appre ciation of the many kindnesses shown them during the illness and death of their mother and grandmother. Milton McKeithan has returned home from the Pine Bluff hospital where he has been undergoing treat ment for some time. Not a Fight Just a Dance Miss Ruth Loopcr has returned home from a week's visit in Philadel phia and New York. She was accom panied home by Sgt. Charles Gordon who is visiting at the heme of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Smith until Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Roland Covington and Miss Mary Stuart .Covington, and Mrs. W. T. Covington will spend Thanks giving with Dr. and Mrs. Fairley Ja.nes in Laurinburg. In the afternoon they will go to Bennettsville, S. C, to attend the wed ding of Miss Harriet Breeden to D. R. Randolph Charles. Miss Breeden is a sister of Mrs. Tom Cameron. Mrs. J. Benton Thomas and Mrs. Paul J. Dezerne have returned from a visit to St. Louis. They visited Mrs. Bob Foreman (Mary Ellen Thomas) but had a meal with the Lewis McBrayers. The outstanding thing told this reporter about that was, how much the McBrayers enjoy ed the News-Journal and what they did with it after reading it. Both Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Dezerne are of the opinion that they are too old to ride sitting up 36 hours on a stretch but they say the trip was worth it. If jTA 0? Walters cf Timberland has returned home alter spending sometime at the bedside of her sister, Miss Lula Floyd, of near Fairmont died Thursday. A. R. Walters and sons, H. B, and Bobby L., attended the funeral Saturday P. M. The later two were pallbearers. is Miss Lila McLean of Laurel Hill visiting Mrs. W. T. Covington. Mrs. Paul Dickson Jr. spent two days with Mrs. James Dickson in Newport News before returning to Raeford. She and Paul 111 will go to Greensboro for a visit to her parents before returning to Raeford to make home while Paul is overseas. Mrs. Tom Cameron and children, are spending this week in Bennetts ville, S. C Mrs. Cameron's sister, Miss Harriet Breeden, is to be married With The Army People Lt. and Mrs. Walter Dargan of Fort Bragg were visitors in Raeford Sun day night. They were returning from a visit to Lt. Dargan's mother in Darlington, S. C. Corporal and Mrs. Frya, who have an apartment at Mrs. H. A. Camerons' are spending a week in Cambridge, Mass. Major and Mrs. Hadley have re turned from a leave spent in New York. Lt. and Mrs. Bill Holden, Jr., of Maxton Air Base have rooms at the Pines but will move to Laurinburg next week where they have taken a house. Lt. and Mrs. Sullivan are occupying the MoGoogan apartments recently vacated by Lt. and Mrs. Otto. Pvt. and Mrs. T. D. Parker have taken rooms at Mrs. C. W. Seats. Major Walker is now stationed at Charlotte. The next meeting of the Officers Wives Club will takt place on Thurs day, December 2, at Kiwanis Hall. Mrs. Abernathy, Mrs. Clift, and Mrs. Clendenin will be hostesses. Mrs. Brady, wife of Corporal Bra dy, who has been staying at Mrs. Seate's, left Tuesday for her home in Ohio.
