TOTE NKWS-JOURVAL, KAEF0X9. V. C THURSDAY, JANUARY iS 1945 PAGE FOUR AMERICAN HEROES BY LEFF Private Kayniond K. Judd, of Navarre, Ohin, volunleered to ewim the wollen and rapid Konoinbi River, New Guinea, in broad dayliiihl, under heavy enemy (ire. Armed only with a pistol and hand grenades, he assisted in towing a rope to the opposite bank to aid the trosin o( the river by a platoon of infantry who secured a briijsehead on the opposite shore. He has been awarded the 1). S. C. It's up to ui to buy the War Bonds! Give them for Christmas. STATESMANSHIP IN THE AMERICAN LEGION In a forthright message to the American people, Eiw-ard N. Schei berling, newly elected National Com mander of The American Legion, not only outlines the high-purpose aims of this alert veterans' organization, but also touches a new high in think ing in behalf of the American people. And it conies at an opportune time. In fact, it stands out in marked con trast to other events of recent weeks and the discension of the political campaign. It also bespeaks a new an'i stronger place for the orgnnization lounded men from the victory in World War I a victory that later proved to be half-won. Of events since 1919, Commander Scheiberling says: "Our experience and our memory of the tragic results of unprepareUness and lack of policy are too bitter the suffering has been too great the price we are paying for national indifference has been too heavy." How true! Looking to the future, the Legion Commander sets forth objectives that can and should be supported by every citizen the very objec tives for which G. I. Joes are fighting. They are briefly: Complete and final victory over our enemies; peace dictated in no uncertain terms and to be maintained by an International group with authority and peace stick; adequate attention and care for the men and women who win victory and peace; full opportunity for these re turning forces and to pick up the threads of life as they left them and a United States internally and ex ternally strong enough to assure them and all other citizens perma nent peace and permanent opportuni ty. He correctly summarizes this pro gram as symbolizing Americanism at its best. National Comnander Schei berling expersses the hope that The American Legion now composed of two million Legionnaires and Auxili ary members of two wars will even tually be an organization of five, six or seven million men. If the Legion is to be the organization it has been in the past and if it is looking to the future under the pattern outlined by its Commander, we hope so too. Am erica needs it. In his first .rajor address the Na ional Comman.ier has given a new lift to The American Legion. He has eiven new meaning to more than 12,000 Legion posts throughout the country. He has given new hope and new confidence to those who believe in the way that brought the United States to the greatest heights of free dom ever attained by any nation. Thanks, Commander Scheiberling, more strength to The American Le gion. wartTds- FOR SALE Giant Striate Crotalaria Seed. 20c lb. L. R.
