MacDONALD MISS ARIS SHANKLE AT DINNER PARTY Miss Aris Shankle, whose mar riage to Mr. Albert Swanson of Tacoma, Washington, will be an in teresting event on February 11, was honored with a most beautiful party on Tuesday evening when Miss Anne Buie entertained the members of the Raeford school faculty and a few other friends at dinner in her apartment at the home of Miss Ida McLauchlin. The apartment was lovely with arrangements of gladioli and camel lias. Small tables at which dinner was served had centerpieces of minia ture nosegays made of carnations and narcissi. The hostess served a delicious dinner. Bridal tallies were passed for bridge and rook. After several progressions Miss Louise Fletcher held high score an received an attractive prize. Miss Shankle was remembered with a dinner plate in her chosen China pattern. RAEFORD WOMEN ATTEND EASTERN STAR MEETING Raeford sent a large delegation to Fayetteville Monday to attend the district meeting of the Order of the Eastern Star. Those going in the afternoon were: Miss Josephine Hall, worthy matron of the local chapter, Edwin Smith, worthy patron, Mrs. J. R. Hampton, Mrs. Maness, Mrs. Star McMillan, Mrs. Paul Dezerne, Mrs. Walter Baker, Mrs. R. A. Mathe- son, Jr., Mrs. Chandler Roberts, Mrs. Frank Tapp, Mrs. D. B. Gillis and Mrs. C. W. Seate. Going over for the evening session were: Mrs. Mar ' cus Smith, Mrs. C. P. Kinlaw, Miss lona Graham, Mrs. Jesse Gulledge and Lacy Clark. -rv- Mrs. E. B. Young and Mrs. E. B. Consult him about prices and service. ENTERTAINS BRIDGE CLUBS Mrs. K. A. MacDonald entertained the two bridge clubs to which she belongs last week. On Wednesday afternoon she had two tables with Mrs. M. T. Poovey winning the club prize and Mrs. Benton Thomas re ceiving a guest prize. Prizes were defense stamps. Coca Colas and sandwiches were refreshments ser ved. Again on Thursday evening, Mrs. MacDonald entertained with two ta bles in play. After several interes ting progressions, scores were added. Mrs. Arthur D. Gore was awarded high score prize for club members, and Mrs. A. K. Currie received visi tor's high. Mrs. MacDonald, as sisted by her daughter, Katherine. served a delectable salad course and hot tea. O MRS. ISRAEL MANN BRIDGE CLUB HOSTESS On Wednesday evening of last week Mrs. Irsael Mann was gracious hostess to her bridge club and sev eral friends. In a room which was most attractive, with open fire and bowls of gladioli, two tables were arranged for the game. Mrs. Paul Dezerne made high score for club members and Mrs. Alfred Cole for visitors. Both received prizes. Mrs. Harry Greene was holding the float ing prize at the end of the game. Club members present were: Mrs. Mann, Mrs. Donald Davis, Mrs. Arch Graham and Mrs. Harry Greene, and guests of the club were: Mrs. Colon Scarborough, Mrs. Alfred Cole, Mrs. Marshall Thomas and Mrs. A. D. Gore. Mrs. Mann served an at tractive salad plate. o BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT S-Sgt. and Mrs. W. Jack Bethune announce the birth of a girl, Gloria Jean, on Friday, January the 26th at Post hospital, Camp, Mackall. O Mrs. Bob Foreman, who has been visiting her husband's parents in Elizabeth City, returned to Raeford last Thursday. Lt. Bruce Mom-is, Jr., (Spec) and Mrs. Morris of Camp Crockett, Tex., arrived this week to spend a two week's leave. Lt. Sam Morris is expected later in the week. W. S. Hancock, father of the late Sgt. Joe Hancock who was recently killed in action on the western front, and Mr. and Mrs. Allan Hancock, spent the past week-end in Raeford with Mrs. Joe Hancock and children at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Morris. Sgt. Hancock's mother was unable to make the trip to Raeford at this time as she is recovering fro.n pneumonia. LATON HONORED BY MRS. K. A. Mai DONALD Mrs. K. A. MacDonald was hostess to a number of friends at her home on Central avenue Tuesday evening at a New Luck party and miscellane ous shower honoring Mrs. Harold Laton, a recent bride and the cf ficient typist for the Hoke County Board of Education. After several games and contests, the hostess pre sented the bride with a New Luck tray containing many lovely and use ful gifts. After all the gifts had been opened the hostess served a delicious salad course with hot cof fee. O MRS. E. B. YOUNG, JR. GUEST OF CLUB Mrs. H. L. Gatlin, Jr., entertained the Book-Bridge club on Thursday afternoon in honor of Mrs. Edward Young, Jr. Two tables made up of club members and Mrs. Young en joyed Mrs. Gatlin's hospitality. De fense stamps, which are always given as prizes, went to Mrs. R. A. Mathe son, Jr., and Mrs. Neill MeFadyen. Mrs. R. A. Matheson also carried home the floating prize and Mrs. Gatlin gave Mrs. Young, Jr., two very lovely handkerchiefs. Mrs. E. B. Young and Mrs. Paul Dickson joined the club members for refresh ments which was a chicken salad plate with coffee and accessories. COCA-COLA PARTY FOR MRS. E. B. YOUNG Mrs. Clyde Upchurch and Mrs. Julian Johnson invited in for coca colas on Saturday afternoon, a small group of old friends of Mrs. E. B. Young, Sr. This delightful informal gathering was held at the home of Mrs. Johnson. Dainty and delicious sandwiches, pastries and confections, were served. Mrs. E. B. Young. Jr., Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, Jr.. Mrs. Paul Dickson, Jr., Mrs. Bob Foreman and Miss Margaret McKenzie were mem bers of the younger set present. Mrs. Edwin Smith is quite sick and is a patient at Pittman's hospital, Fayetteville. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dezerne and Cecil Dew spent the day in Char lotte Sunday. Cecil Dew went espec ially to take his sister, Mrs. Jack Renn, who was returning to Ruther fordton, after having spent the past nonth with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Dew. They say it is wonderful to get back to the sunny South after being in two feet of smuv and zero weather. Mrs. M. Bauniuartner came home from Post hospital, Fort Bragg, last week end and is at her apartment at Mrs. Julian Johnson's. She is get ting along nicely and is able to be up, but does very little walking yet. Due to sickness, the Officer's Wives club will not meet this week. Topdress Small Grains early For best yiel Is, small grains in most sections of North Carolina should be topdressed between Febr uary 1 and March 15, says W. H. Iiankin, agronomist of the Agr cul tural Experiment station at State college. Through the years tests have shown that late application of top dressing after April have resulted in lower yields than where the sa re amount of topdressing was applied at an earlier date, according to Ran kin. He reports that under avs-age conditions every topdressing with 16 pounds of nitrogen per acre gave Mr. and Mrs. Walter Baker are mnvino into the Williford house this week which they recently purchased. Mrs. Hugh Lowe of Charlotte, was at home for a few days the first of the week. She returned to Charlot'e Wednesday taking Miss Leonora Currie back with her. Leonora, who is at Queen's, had spent several days with her parents. Miss Suzanne Lindeman of Spar tanburg, was the guest of her sister. Mrs. Perry Macomson, Saturday and Sunday. She returned to Spartun- burg Tuesday, taking little Billie Lamont Dickson home with her to spend several weeks. Mrs. Arch MeFadyen has returned to her home in Raeford after a three week's visit to her son, Frank, in Sarasota, Fla. While there, three grandsons of Mrs. MeFadyen, sons of Mr. and Mrs' Frank MeFadyen, left for overseas service. The three are in different branches of the service.
