FAGE TWO THE NEWS-JOURNAL, RAEFORD, N. C. THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 1945 Points For Seeding Permanent Pastures The type of seeding mixture that should be used for permanent pas tures in North Carolina will de pend on the fertility and moisture level of the soils and the soil type, says Dr. R. L. Lovvern, in charge of forage crops investigations for the Agricultural Experiment Sta tion at State College. For average sandy soils of the Coastal Plain he recommends 10 pounds of Dallis grass and 15 pounds ! or Kobe lespedeza per acre. For fertile and moist soils in this area, he recommends a mixture of 8 pounds of Dallis grass. 5 pounds of orchard grass, 15 pounds of Kobe lespeJeza, and 1 pound of white clover. He points out that Bermuda grass root stocks may be substituted for Dallis grass on the sandy soils. In the Piedmont and Mountain sections on poor to medium soils, the recommendation is 6 pounds of orchard grass, 6 pounds of redtop, 4 pounds of Dallis grass, and 15 poun.is of lespedeza. Pastures on good to medium soils can be estab lished with 10 pounds of orchard grass, 5 pounds of Dallis grass, 15 pounds of lespedeza, and 1 pound of white clover. Lespedeza, or lespe deza and sweet clover, should be planted on poor soils. On these prjor soils grasses can be ad 'ed after ihe fertility has been increased through the use of legumes. Dr. Lovvern calls special attention to the need for plenty of manure and fertilize;' for permanent pastures on all soils. The more plant food sup plied, thi' better the grazing. These pastures should also be seeded at the proper time. While usually it is be'ter practice to seed then in the fall, they may be suc cessfully seeded in the spring. Lov vnrn recommends the following dates: Coastal plain, Feb. 15 to March 15; Piedmont, March 1 to 31; Mountains. March 15 to April 15.
