McNeill last Wednesday evening in honor of Mrs. John K. McNeill, Jr., of Greenville, S. C, who with her husband, was visiting his parents. There were three tables of rook and two of bridge. Mrs. Bob Behrman won the high score prize in rook and Miss Louise Blue in bridge. The hostess gave lovely gifts to her honor guests: Mrs. AlvisDickson, who is visitin gher husband's mother; and to Mrs. James Stephens and Mrs. Walter Barrington, Jr., recent brides, and Mrs. George Bethune. Raeford friends oT Earl Smith, who was formerly a member of the high school faculty and athletic coach, will be interested to know that he has recently received his commission as second lieutenant in the army. He was drafted in 1943. Mrs. Clyde Mclnnis and children will leave for Florida this week to join her husband, instead of last week as formerly stated in the News Journal. She sent her furniture and household good 4 by truck last week . Miss Mildred Sanders of the REA office has returned to her home, after having been quite sick and a patient at Highsmith's hospital. She has not yet returned to her work. Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Gatlin, Jr., and Leon, went to High Point Sunday and came back Monday afternoon H. L. went to get furniture for the store. BASS DANCE PUPILS PRESENTED IN RECITAL Becton Bass, who has had a mo-t luccesaful dancing class in Rat-ford the ipast winter, presented his young pupils in a charming recital last Friday evening at 8:30 o'clock in the Hoke high school auditorium. These students gave their numbers with grace and rhythum and were received with enthusiastic corment by an appreciative audience. Mr. Bass presented some of Tils pupils from Fayetteville in this re cital. OFFICER Last week, at the annual meeting of the Federation of Women's clubs of North Carolina in Raleigh, Mrs. R. L. Murray was elected chairman of the literature department of the State Federation. Mrs. Murray was in Montreat at the time and was notified of her election by telegram. She hasn't decided as to whether she will accept the honor and office with its heavy responsibilities. 0 Miss Beverly Bremer and Mr. Robert Wharton of Monmouth Beach and Verona, N. Mrs. J. B. Thomas accompanied Mr. Thomas to Sanford last Friday to inspect a freezer locker unit. ! L!. and Mrs. Heath have given up their aparment at Miss Ida Mc Lauchlin's and have left for New York. They made numerous- friends in Raeford. Mrs. Heath gave her time and services unstintedly to help with the health program in the Hoke county schools. John Scott Poole went to Normal. 111., a suburb of Chicago, by bus last Fri'Jay. He went espicially to drive back to North Carolina with his aunt. Miss Madge Coble of Liberty, who had been teaching at Normal the past winter. Mrs. Bob Conk and Lynn are leaving Friday of this week for Eus tis, Fla., for a visit to Mrs. Conk's parents. Mrs. Conk will not give up her apartment at Mrs. J. B. Thomas' this sumver, however, as she ex pects to return to Raeford even though she has resigned from the high school faculty. Lt. Col. Conk is now in China. Mis. Mary Snead Halperin and daughter Sandra, left Wednesday of this w eek for a visit to her late hus band's relatives in Natick, Mass. Enroute to Natick, they will visit in Baltimore and Boston. O Claimed By Death John F. Ferguson John F. Ferguson, 76, of Parkton, died Sunday evening in Moore county hospital following an illness of several months. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 3 p. m. from Parkton Presbyterian church, of which he was a life-long member by his former pastor, Rev. T. A. Guiton of Lil linglon, assisted by Rev. T. G.
