Copies of the publication may be obtained either from the county a gent or by writing directly to Howard Garris, Extension plant pathologist, State College, Raleigh. Granville wilt, black shank, sore shank, and southern root rot princi oal diseases of tobacco In North Ca rolina are often confused by grow- ers. Therefore, the identification of i these diseases absolutely necessary, if they are to be controlled. Howard Garriss, Extension plnnt pathologist at State College, says that this year some growers used Oxford 26 tobacco, which is resistant to Granville wilt, an i were disappoint ed with it. The reason was that the tobacco was suffering from black shank, and the grower should have grown one of the Oxford strains 1. 2, 3, or 4. There are no varieties which are resistant to sore shank or southern root rot, and there are no specific methods of control. 1 Growers who have damaging to bacco diseases should consult the county agent and make a careful study of Farmers Bulletin No. 1952, which will help them identify the principal tobacco diseases as they occur in the field. It contains ex cellent photographs giving typical ex amples of the various diseases and also calls special attention to the value of crop rotations in disease John Scott Poole and Malcolm Mc Keithan had a great time in Wash ington last week when they saw the Washington Senators, take a double header from the Detroit Tigers.
