ENTERTAIN WITH
SEVERAL PARTIES
"Mesdames Tommy Upchurch, Tom
Cameron andi Lewis Upchurch were
charming and -gracious hostesses at
a series of lovely parties this week,
given at the home of the latter.
On Monday evening they enter
tained with a dinner bridge. Eight
tables were placed in the living
rooms and bridge was enjoyed, after
a delectable dinner was served by
the hostesses. Mrs. Mitchell Dp
stein was the recipient of high score
prize and guest prize went to Mrs.
William Covington.
At ten thirty o'clock on Tuesday
morning a delightful bridge luncheon
was given. Guests played at seven
tables, at the conclusion of which
high score prize was awarded Mrs.
Israel Mann and guest prize Mrs.
Clarence Brown. Invited for the
luncheon hour were Mrs. Marion
Gatlin, Mrs. G. W. Brown and Mrs.
Clarence Brown.
Again on Wednesday at three
o'clock, an hour of hospitality was
greatly enjoyed when a number of
friends gathered at the home of Mrs.
Upchurch when tfiree tables of rook
and set back were in play. During
the afternoon delicious refreshments
were served the guests.
On all occasions the rooms were
beautifully arranged with a pro
fusion of fall flowers.
at the home of Mrs. Scarborough.
Dahlias, cosmos and other fall flowers
.were tastefully used throughout the
rooms.
At teti thirty o'clock FrWay morn
ing, guests arrived to make up five
tables of bridge. After several pro
gressions, Mrs. J. L. McNeill won high
score prize and Mrs. Crawford Thom
as captured the floating prize. Guest
prize was presented Mrs. Clarence
Brown. A delicious luncheon was
served to the players and to guests
making a sixth table, who were in
vited for luncheon.
At six thirty o'clock that evening
they were hostess to another bridge
party. Dinner was served the guests
and was followed by bridge with
five tables in play. Winners in the
evening were Mrs. Frank Tapp, who
receive.-! high score prize and Mrs.
N. B. Blue, who was given the float
ing prize.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Chapman, who
visited Mr. Chapman's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. George Chapman In At
lantic City, N. J., earlier this week,
will visit New York City, Niagara
Falls and Toronto, Canada before
returning home.
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Paschal of
Greensboro spent a few days this
week with Mr. and' Mrs. J. E. Gul
ledge and family.
Mrs. Clayton Maxwell, who has
been a patient at Baker Sanatorium
in Lumberton, returned home Mon
day afternoon. '
C. L. Thomas and Younger Snead,
local Chevrolet dealers, returned
from Charlotte this week where they
! attended a preview of the new 1946
'Chevrolet at the company's zone
I headquarters.
They wfre reluctant to discuss the
mechanical and style features of the
new car, but by their eager attitude
it was apparent that they expected
I the formal announcement and public
showing of the car to be at an ear
ly date.
Throughout the war period, car
owners have been forced to get a
l long with their old automobiles. At
jthe same time dealers have expended
'every effort to service these cars,
'and to keep thm rolling for th dura
tion. ! Mr. Thomas and Mr. Snead stres
sed car care, with the warning that
; motorist should not expect the 1946
; Chevrolet to be available in great
quantities immediately. The supply
to dealers will increase as production
in the Chevrolet plants perjnits.

Woman's Club To
Hold Open Meeting
The Woman's club of Raeford will
have its annual open meeting of all
departments in the Rat-ford Kiwanis
hall next Tuesday afternoon, Octo
ber 23, at three-thirty o'clock.
This meeting is to pay special
tribute to the returned war veter
ans of Hoke county and several re
turned veterans are being invited to
attend. Arrangements have been
made for several of these men to
speak to the ladies briefly on sub
jects of their own choosing. Refresh
ments will be served.

a bridge party on last Wednesday
afternoon at three thirty o'clock at
her home. Attractive arrangements
of fall flowers were used in the liv
ing room.

with Mrs. N. B. Sinclair winning
high score prize and Mrs. John Mc
Googan the floating prize. A de
licious supper was served the guests.
CHAMINADE CLUB
MEETS TUESDAY
The Chaminade music club met
Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs.

Cole joint hostess. The president,
Mrs. J. S. Poole, presided over the
business session, and the meeting
was openedi with the club hymn, ac
corrpanied by Mrs. Luke Bethune,
after which Mrs. W. B. McLauch
lin read the collect. Mrs. Dwight
Brown conducted the study which
was on "Spanish Renaissance". Mrs.
Hugffi Lowe of Charlotte, state radio
chairman, gave a report of the
regional board meeting of the Na
tional Federation of Music clubs
which met in Charlotte September
18th and 19th. She also gave two
piano numbers, Allemande and Ga
votte, (Suite No. 1) by D" Albert and
Golliwog's Cakewalk by Debussy.
During the social hour the hos
tesses served a salad plate with coffee.
