QUESTION: How should I go a
bout controlling cow poN?
ANSWER: Dr. C. D. Grinnells,
veterinarian for the Agricultural Ex
periment Station at State College,
suggests that you segregate the in
fected fnimals from the remainder
of the herd and arrange for a sepa
rate caretaker for these animals, if
possible. In mild cases he suggests
cleanliness in milking by dipping
the teats after each milking in chlo
rine solution. Tincture of iodine in
glycerine of equal parts Is also use
ful. When cow pox is neglected the
disease often becomes a predisposing
cause to mastitis, an inflammation
of the u der, winch is the dairy
man's No. 1 piblem.
QUESTION: What is the best con
trol measure for tobacco falling down
in the field?
ANSWER: Howard R. Garrjss,
Extension plant patholog'st, says that
you are probably referring to the
rore shank, or rotten stalk Jisease,
which is found in many tobacco soils,
particularly on soils that are not well
drained. The disease also does con
siderable damage where phn:s have
been injured by wire worms. There

Forty Million Surplus Shells To
Be Sold This Month.
Duck, pheasant and other small
game hunters will have plenty of
12-gauge shotgun shells on hand
this fall for their favorite sport, ac
cording to an announcement just is
sues in Washington toy the Office
of Surplus Propel ty, Department of
Commerce.
Over forty million rounds of twelve
gauge shells, frozen for military
use since the start of the war, will
be sold this month to dealers through
out the eleven United States Re
gional Offices of the office of Surplus
Property.
The sale began October 13, 1945.
Supplies of shotgun shells for
civilian use have beer extremely
short and the return of this am
munition to dealers shelves in time
for the hunting seasons will be wel
comed toy sportsmen the country over.
The shells will also be useful to far
mers and ranchers for crop and
livestock protection.
The ammunition being sold Is of
the standard commercial type used
by hunters and includes both bird-
charge of Extension agronomy. It
will kill the leaves on poison ivy
but will probably not kill the roots.
It is not effective on crabgrass, quack
grass, Johnson grass, nutgrass, or
other weedy grasses and sedges. There
is danger in using your garden spray
er in puttirig out this 'material. A
small amount of it will endanger
useful plants. The material teems
to offer great possibilities when a
capted to the type of weeds for
which it is best suited.

Wholesaler $25.93 per 1000 shells;
Chain and mail order house $28.52
per 1000 shells; Retailer $32.41 per
1000 shells; OPA retail ceiling $2.80
per 1000 shells or $1.07 per box of
25 shells.
Prices on the shells loaded with
"buckshot" are as follows:
Wholesaler $33.42 per 1000 shells;
Chain and mail order house $36.76
per 1000 shelis: Retailer $41.78 per
1000 shells; OPA ceiling $55.20 per
1000 shells or $1.38 per box of 25
shells.
To effect equitable distribution,
ninimum and maximum quantities
which may be purchased have been
established.
