Trgasury Dtpartmtnt State College Answers Timely Farm Questions QUESTION: Where can I get one of the wheat bins being offered by the Commidity Credit Corporation? ANSWER: A recent report from F. C. Hall of the AAA office at State college stated that there were 9 bins at each of the following loca tions: Trenton, Kinston, Snow Hill, and Smithfield with 2 in Nash Coun ty and 3 in Beaufort. Hall sug gested that prospective purchasers get in touch with the AAA offices at the various points before visiting the county for the inspection of the bins. QUESTION: W. H. Wheeler, Jr., Etension farm forester of the State College Extension Service, suggests that you do what S. M. Tyson of Wadesboro is doing on 35 acres. Wheeler helped Tyson mark the trees on one acre and found that the whole area would produce about 200 to 225 units of pulp- wood. In about 10 to 15 years there will be a good growth of sawtimber on the land. It's work such as this that can materially increase our pro duction of timber, Wheeler says. . QUESTION: What Is the best kind of poultry litter? ANSWER: Prof. Roy S. Dearstyne, head of the Poultry Department at State College, says that ground corn cobs is one of the best types of lit ter available on the farm and that no poultryman should lose the op portunity of building up a supply of this type of litter. While not the best, wood shavings provide ac ceptable litter and poultryman near a sawmill can depend on this sup ply. "It's bad to run out of litter in mid-winter and nows the time to provide a full supply," Dearstyne says. 0 Farm Wage Rates Still Climbing Raleigh, October 23. North Caro lina farmers are paying an average of $3.40 per day for their labor, according to Frank Parker, head of the Statistics division of the State Department of Agriculture. Basing his estimate on figures com piled by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, Parker said that the daily wage rate for hired laborers is 40 cents higher than year ago. However, It is still 99 cents lower than the $4.39 average for the coun try as a whole. Farmers who furnish labor with meals pay an estimated $2.85 per day as compared with $2.50 for Oc tober of 1944. Monthly farm wage rates In North Carolina are now running at around $65 without board and $47.75 with board. The average U. S. farm wage rate per month with board Is $85, com pared with $76.40 a year ago, and without board it is $95.70 as against $86.80 last fall. Parker said that national farm employment Is about seven per cent lower than a year ago largely be cause of heavy rains in many areai of the United States. Farm em ployment in the South Is down nine per cent from last year, with a de crease of approximately 2,500,000 pounds In the quantity of cotton to be picked. While wage rates for the U, S. as a whole are 245 per cent higher than for the 1910-14 period, which is considered average, they are low er than in July in most areas. But in North Carolina they are "some higher" than last summer.
