THE NEWS-JOURNAL, RAEFORD, N. C THURSDAY, NOV. 15th, 1945 The News-Journal m;ktwo Published Thursday At Raeford, North Carolina Subscription Rates $2 per year For Servicemen $1.50 per year PAUL DICKSON, Editor Entered ai seoond-class mail mat ter at the poet office at Raeford, N. C, undsr Act of March I, 1871V IT'S ABOUT TIME At the Kwris meeting last Thurs day night the subject of the very poor telephone service furnished this community by the Carolina Tele phone and Telegraph company for the past decade or two came up for discussion. Ways and means of re rredying the situation were talked about and first it was naturally sug gested that an appeal be made to the corpany to improve their service. However, further discussion re vealed that this would probably do no good, as several persons present stated that appeals had been made without result. Neill McFadyen, mayor of Ratsford, stated that he had been looking into the town rec ords to find the terms of the com pany s franchise here out mat up to now he had been unable to find a copy of it. Our idea is that this town should get a competent lawyer to investigate this franchise and then appeal to the S:ate Utilities Commission or take whatever otner action necessary to have the franchise of the Carolina Telephone and Telegraph company here revoked if they do not agree to do something about the service and equipment here at once and then DO IT. This company will undoubtedly make the reply that they have done nothing because of the war. That excuse is probably valid for the period of the war, but the telephones here were in a condition Just about as bad as now for quite (ew years before the war. Another stunt which might make them sit up and take notice if prac ticed by all jnbscribers is that of paying monthly1 phone bills for only so much time during a month as the phones were operational, on a pro rata basis. We don't know whether this is legal or not, but sev eral Kiwanians stated last Thurs day night that they had followed this procedure and that the company had not collected the amount de ducted for non-operational time. At any rate, Mr. and Mrs. Rae ford, it is certainly about time we did something.
