The tiny train shown above Is the Seaboard Railway's
first. The locomotive was built in England and shipped
to America by sailing vessel. Christened the "Raleigh,"
this half-pint engine was running from Portsmouth, Vir
ginia, to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1846. The "Raleigh"
weighed ten tons and boasted a top speed of 20 miles per
hour. Thus she was the marvel of her time.
The giant locomotive below the "Raleigh" is the "Rail
plaster" world's largest and most powerful diesel-elec-tric.
Generating 3,000 horsepower in a single unit, the
big fellow weighs in at nearly 600,000 pounds and will
cruise along at 120 miles per hour. The train in tow is
Seaboard's famous '"Silver Meteor."
