In the interest of returning vete
rans and others who contemplate
building homes in the near future,
the News-Journal presents a post
war series of All American Homes.
This week, we have selected THE
TAFT. The quiet dignity and hos
pitable charm of Colonial architec
ture are embodied in this home for
wt'H planned building and comfort
table living.

Garden Tour
Some i f the girls in our
tx.ity made pictures of the
''H rice mill and other out
standing spots.
After our visit here, we
went back to Charleston and
over the Cooper River brid
i . Thi.7 bridge is two miles
1' ;:g and was the highest
bridge in the United States
before the Golden Gate
Bridge in San Francisco was
built. Passing over the brid
ge was the only part of the
trip I must admit I did not
exactly enjoy - especially
since the first cars were
just allowed to go across
the bridge about 2 hours
earlier. The bridge had been
damaged a few weeks be
fore when a ship broke an
chor during a strom. You
can imagine the noise a bus
load of women can make all
talking at once. There was
very little conversation
however, while we were go-
1:. over the bridge.
We had dinner in Gccrge
ir.vn and visited Brook
green garden near Myrtle
Beach on our way home. The
garden was formerly own
ed by Mr. and Mrs. Hunting
ton, who, several years ago,
gave the property to the
state of South Carolina.
We hope Mrs. McLaurin's
plants grow. They should.
She didn't thank anyone
for them.
The next tour we make
we would like to suggest
taking along a secretary.
Some of our group who car
ry on such a heavy corre
spondence sometimes delay
the bus.
We had a wonderful trip.
A grand group of folks made
the tour and when another
club tour is announced I'm
sure all the women who
went to Charleston will want
to go along.

Refrigerator molds for
salads and deserts have been
so designed that they take
up less room thnn a quart
ot milK. lhe answer is that
they are placed in an up
right rack. This new heuse

six aluminum molds and

Canned goat milk is now
available. It is whole milk,
not condensed and not evap
orated. The flavor is slightly
different from the fresh,
jut pleasant drinking all the
same .It is considered a
blessing for those on diets
demanding this milk so dif
ficult to buy fresh.
Sleeping bags, mittens,
hunting jackets and other
cold weather, out-door clot
hing may soon be interlined
with downlike, superfine
glass fibers similar to those
used during the war for
sound and heat insulation
in B 29's.
Because the glassfibers are
in-organic, and contain no
protein substance that can
cause an allergy such as as
thma, experiments are being
made to use the fibers in
pillows and mattresses. Bed
ding dust resulting from the
disintegration of the organic
materials usually used, is ;
considered the principal j
cause cf distress to more ;
than one million asthma i
victims.
j
Food mixers designed with ;
an eye to compactness are
only eight inches high, have
built-in power units with
twelve speeds and with beat
ers of the double action type.
The mixing bowls are of
stainless steel. The same
manufacturer is introduc
ing a non-electric vacum
sweeper which draws power
from a wheel contacting the
floor. It weighs only 7
pounds.
Old plaster need not be
removed. A new material
just invented can be applied
over old; cracked and chip
ped wall saving time, ex
pense in knocking down the
old plaster is used. It can
also be used over rough
I finish. It claimed to seal all
i openings around windows
' and doors as well as cracks
and crevices.
