North Carolina agricul

war-expanded markets by
maintaining quality produc

27,000,000 acres of cropland
under the soil conservation
service.
"This growing emphasis on
soil care means that we food
distributors can anticipate
receiving improved quality
of produce from North Ca

Soil Conservation
Points The Way To
Better Farm Yield
IMPORTANT NOTICE
To Our Fertilizer Customers:
It looks as if the steel strike, followed by the coal strike,
has just about ended whatever hope we had of getting
an adequate supply of Nitrate of Soda, Cal-Nitro, or
Sulphate of Ammonia, this season. The manufacturers
simply cannot run without coal, and the demand made
on them for nitrogen materials is heavier than ever, not
only from this country, but also f om abroad.
The only safe answer we know now to the situation is
prompt use of regular crop fertilizers for top dressing.
We have a Imiited amount of 5-10-5 premium goods, and
also a limited amount of 6-8-6 general crop goods. In
addition to this we may be able to supply very small
amounts of 10-0-10 or Cyanamid later.
Whatever supplies of Nitrate of Soda, Cal-Nitro, or
Top Dressers, are available to us will be delivered as
they come in, on a pro-rata basis of our early bookings
for these materials.
Your patience and forbearance are appreciated. We
are doing our very best to obtain all the nitrogen mat
erials we can for you.
The Johnson Co.
duce last year, our company
has a stake in the efforts of
growers to step up fertility
of their soil. In many soil
conservation districts during
the war our field buying of
fices found production of
fruits and vegetables up as
much as 20 percent. Much
of this was due to pre-war
soil-saving practices."
Baum pointed out that at
the present time more than
half of the nation's agricul
tural land nearly 800,000,-
000 acres on 3,592,000 farms
1 n45 states is under such
planning, more than 228,000
North Carolina farms enrol
led. Besides improving the qua
lity and increasing the vol
ume of farm production crop
land conservation coincides
with a growing efficency in
the distribution of food, he
said. The war emphasized
the need for beter packaging,
speedier shipment, more ef
fective refrigeration and a
concerted war on waste.
Combined with such im
provements in distribution,
the efforts of farmers to pro
duce more efficiently will
mean a general reduction of
the nation's food bill and an
increase in farm income,
Baum said.
